In honor of the alt-text in today’s XKCD, I need a name for my wireless network. I always get a kick out of what the anonymous people of my neighborhood name their networks. What are some clever names? I don’t know the character limit, but I believe it’s around 15 characters.
At my previous apartment, we could see a secured network called “FUCK YOU PAY ME,” which I thought was kind of funny.
Some of my personal ideas:
“mind control ray” (if 16 characters can fit)
“google dot com”
“disconnected” (imagine: “you are now connected to disconnected”)
“something” (this was my old wireless network: “you are now connected to something”)
My neighbor’s is pretty clever. They have the last name of Bacon (well, it’s spelled differently, but we needn’t get too personal) and their network is “Bacon Bits”.
This reminds me (again!) that I really need to secure my home wireless network. I tried to do it when the cable was hooked up shortly after I moved in, but couldn’t get my laptop to be able to hook up. Although at least I know what I want to call mine.
I thought about something like that once, then decided that any part-time hackers in the neighborhood would probably try extra hard to break into CPDVice1138.

I’m fond of using things like “CP Server” or just plan “KiddiePix” and stuff like that. Tends to creep people out and make them stay away.

“CP Server” would never in a million years resolve they way you wanted it to, absent the context.
(For me, anyway.)
For some reason, whenever I set up a wireless network, it’s always [noun]house.
Eg; my personal wireless network is “muddhouse.”
The one I set up for my friend Kat (who likes cats) is “cathouse.”
The one I set up for my mom is “dollhouse.” (Her nickname as kid was “Dolly.”)
