An elderly relative of mine is in early-stage Alzheimer’s, something that was only discovered after her son had pretty much stolen $250,000 of her life savings. To protect her, her daughter and her neice entered her into a legal gaurdianship, so that her son and all those boiler-room types in Florida could not get at the rest of her savings, which were SUPPOSED to keep her out of the county home as she aged.
Unfortunately, they did not do a very good job of picking a legal guardian. They went with the old “friend of a friend” thing. The woman they picked, let’s call her Fifi, has been very uncommunicative. Her major concern was getting the woman out of the extended care home near her relatives in St. Petersburg to an extended care home where all her other wards were kept, thus making things easier for Fifi, but not for all her relatives who wanted to visit her from time to time.
The relatives managed to keep that from happening, but they’ve been very unhappy with Fifi’s general uncommunicativeness and obvious lack of interest in her ward’s welfare. They want to change guardians, but I think it would be a good idea for them to do some research before they do so, so they’ll pick a good one this time and maybe have a little better understanding of what the guardian’s responsibilities to them and to her ward should be.
Can anyone who’s had more experience with this recommend a place where they should start?
