I just found a black kitten, probably female, in the parking lot of my apartment complex. I’m estimating age at about 6-8 weeks.
I can’t keep her myself (lease restrictions requiring pets to be 1yo+, altered, and housebroken), and I can’t find a shelter or a rescue with room for her. I’m in the Sacramento, CA area.
Suggestions? Simply dumping her is NOT an option, and I’m very reluctant to take her anywhere where she’ll be PTS right away without getting a chance at a home.
It’s unlikely that she was outside by accident, but it wouldn’t hurt to put up some posters anyway. Could be someone’s looking for her, or someone who wants a kitten will see your poster.
If she’s black, please please please keep her safe with you until after Halloween!!!
Don’t put up posters for her quite yet - black cats have a really bad time of it right about now, and even shelters find that it’s hard to home a black kitty.
Can you keep her for long enough to hopefully foist her off onto an acquaintance, family member, or friend? I think even leases are ok with temporary arrangements - and unless she’s really bad off, she should know what to do with a litter box already.
I’m sorry to say that if she’s a stray and black, her chances are pretty grim no matter where you take her and turn her in.

Lots of strays in my area (thus, high chance that Mama’s a stray), and I was asking around other tenants, with no luck. This building requires pets to be over 1 year old, so if she does live here, she’s not supposed to, so I doubt her actual humans (if any) would claim her and thereby admit to a lease violation. Her age is the main reason I don’t think I can keep her myself longer than a few days (my established cat is very unhappy with the houseguest, and that’s a factor too). I’ll do my best to hang on to her until I find a trustworthy new situation for her, but every rescue I’ve called is too full to take any new cats, as is the city shelter. I’ll check SPCA when they’re open.
Oh, boy, litterbox. The one we have is too tall for someone that tiny!
Most shelters, so far as I know, simply refuse to adopt out black cats (or dogs) around Halloween, for the animal’s safety.
Hmm, this could get a little complicated, but you could contact a rescue and offer to foster an adult cat for them in order to let them fit your little kitten into a kitten-compatible home. That way, they’d be able to make a space for her. It would mean you’d have to foster a cat for a while, but maybe not too long. And fostering is fun. Try going to PetCo on the weekend and seeing what you can find out about the rescues that show cats there. You might be able to speak face-to-face with a real cat-rescue-involved person, which could help.
I’d take her in a second, but can’t drive to Sacramento.
And there’s no way I can drive to your location.
