Need Help from Dopers with Small Boys

Now this is a pretty weird request. I’m working on an art project/costume. I need to figure out what size underwear waist on a small boy corresponds to an adult hat size. I’ve got a fairly large head, maybe hat size 7 3/4.

Do any of you people have a kid that wears tighty whitey briefs? If yes, stick them on your head. If they fit about as snugly as a beanie, let me know the underwear size and brand. Also, let me know how huge your head is.

Thank you in advance.

Sigh. I’ll bite.

Boy’s size 6X seems to work for me, for big-headed male I’m thinking size 7. But you know, they are pretty inexpensive at Walmart or Target, you could buy a couple of sizes and see which fits best.

Ha Ha! Made you stick underwear on your head!

No seriously, thanks. What sizes do kids underwear come in? Do the sizes roughly correspond to age or something? I could buy a bunch of different sizes of underwear, but my project only needs one size, and I doubt Walmart would be psyched if I brought back opened packages.

The fit is pretty important because I notice my head starts to ache if I have too tight a band on my head. Plus, I need it tight enough to stay on while snowboarding or in a very stiff wind (Burning Man type gusts).

1 pack is less than 5 bucks. If you go into the store they have a little charty thing on the back of the packaging to see the sizes. But if you aren’t willing to invest $15 or $20 to get the right fit you should just pack up and go home.

And that is the limit of the research I’m willing to do on this topic. Enjoy your marginally skeevy underpants wearing adventure. I’m going try and forget this ever happened.

I dunno. It’s not really ecologically sound to buy a bunch of crap that I’m not going to use. I’m not sure I really want 24 pairs of kids underwear. On the other hand, this project was inspired by a much more grandiose idea, which needs lots more underwear. All the underwear has to be the same size though, so it would still be a waste.

That Walmart sizing chart helps though. A 7 3/4 hat size corresponds to a 24.5 inch circumference. The equivalent waist size puts me at a Small or size 4.

I guess hat size roughly correlates to hat band diameter.

You can always donate the underwear you don’t use to the local homeless shelter. They can almost always use that stuff.

So…why don’t you measure the circumference of your head then look at a size chart for the waists of boys’ underwear to see which matches up? You can get a fabric or plastic measuring tape for this in a store’s craft department for about $1, or you could use string and measure it with a ruler.

That’s what I did in post 5. And yeah, I guess I could donate the underwear to a homeless shelter, but I’m trying to pull this project off for as cheap as possible.

Is there going to be a bet to see who could guess what the OP is up to?

I bet it’s some sort of superhero costume.

You could go to a thrift store, at least in Chicago they sell underwear there, yes both boxer, briefs, long underwear etc…

Wouldn’t it be easier to just go to the local playground and start measuring little boys waists?

What could possibly go wrong? :p:D
