I reformatted my hard drive and reloaded Win98 recently, due to virus problems and an accumulation of old programs. Now I can’t get anything other than 16-color mode on my display. I need 256 color mode at least to run my basic games, and the system previously supported the 16-byte color mode. How do I fix this? How do I determine the correct drivers to load, and where do I get them?
You need to determine what your graphics board is. You can then most likely download the drivers from the manufacturor site. If the video is on the mobo, you can check the mobo site. If you do not have this info listed somewhere, you may need to check the board itself.
If your machine is a Dell by chance, you can figure this out on the Dell support site by putting in your service tag, which will allow you to bring up the system specs as shipped. You could then download the drivers from that site. Other comp manufacturors may have some equivalent system.
