I am building a barrel smoker over a stone/dirt BBQ pit in my back yard. I have painted the barrel fully black on the outside, just for appearance sake. While it looks nice, I want to put something else on it, such as a logo or picture. I can stencil and spray a good bit of stuff, but what should I use!?
I need opinions on what you would put on your barrel, supposing you had one, or what you think would be interesting on one. My students suggest all black paint with a brightly colored biohazard symbol, as it would be fun to drive past and see a biohazard symbol on a smoking barrel behind a house. Another was the Dharma symbol from Lost in white on the front center. My son wanted to paint the whole thing purple - but I’d already done the black. We’ve discussed basic symbols, sports team logos, and whatnot, but are open to any ideas!
What kinds of beast are you planning on smoking? How about outlines of them? I just did a Google image search for “pig outline” and found this, for example. You could have a cow, a chicken, a pig, etc.
The other thing that leaps to mind is one of those fallout shelter symbols – for some reason that amuses me. Or, even more appropriate (but maybe too obvious): a no-smoking symbol.
My wife called me today and brought up the no smoking symbol to put on it. I kind of like the idea. In general, it will be used for pork roast, then possibly some other stuff. Fallout shelter sounds fun. I think I’m going to gather as many ideas as possible and have a family vote…
Adding on to the previous poster, maybe some sort of victory tally? I have seen something about planes adding small silhouettes to illustrate each plane they shot down. Maybe adding a few stenciled icons of a pig, a cow, or anything else you smoke. You don’t have to do a whole bunch, just a few for each kind. Or you could add on after each session of smoking.
Well, it is completely black now. I finished the last coat of grill paint tonight and painted the lid…things are looking up. I think the first bit of pork will be able to cook on Sunday. I can paint any time next week because we will only be cooking on the weekends. Of course, I’m thinking I may need several ideas because one logo will cover the door, then maybe some around the barrel on the lower part. Great ideas so far! Thanks Dopers!
Hmm. Maybe a stenciled chicken, pig, cow and human. If that’s to busy or extreme, maybe just a stenciled monkey. That would be simple and still set mental gears spinning.
