How does one say: ‘Happy Birthday’ in standard Gaelic. I know the online translations are literal and tend to get it wrong gramatically… I’d like to wish a man whose birthday is coming up and who is of Scottish ancestry - born raised there until he was 21, lived here (US) for the last 42 years…He speaks Gaelic at home with his children and wife and is an avid collector of anything that has to do with his bloodline - family crests, fabrics, plates, goblets etc…etc…
I’d like to say:
Happy Birthday
May you have a wonderful day and may this year be better than the last!
Any help would be breatly appreciated!
Or if you know other Gaelic sayings for a birthday that an American wouldn’t know and you’d care to share them here, I’d be grateful to hear them!
Yes, he should. Scots and Irish are essentially two different dialects of the same language. In fact, Donegal Irish (from the north of Ireland) is indistinguishable from Scots Gaelic to my ear.
The grammar and syntax should be same, but the spelling and pronunciation may be slightly different. It should certainly be understandable.
