Countless Google image searches, poking around online, and even checking my boxes of smoked salmon resulted in nothing. I am trying to find a few pictures of whales or salmon in the style of the Pacific Northwest Native American tribes. The stylized and very distinctive pictures are what I am after. Are there any sites with examples of it that you know of? Any books I could get from the library? Thanks!
What did you use to search Google? The argument “kwakiutl whale” brought up the following:

You might get more results with “kwakiutl salmon”, “chinook whale” or some other groups, as well.
The Seattle Art Museum: http://www.seattleartmuseum.org/ has a wonderful collection of NWCoast Indian art, and you can search their collection online. You can also try searching for Northwest Coast art galleries; many of them give pictures online of the pieces they have for sale. From the Land of the Totem Poles by Aldona Jonaitis has some beautiful photographs of the NYMusuem of Natural History’s collection. *Northwest Coast Indian Art: an Analysis of Form *, by Bill Holm will give you some more stylized line drawings (and analysis of the elements that make them up. Kwakiutl Art by Audrey Hawthorne has a lot of photos.
I have access to some original art scrimshawed in walrus tusk but you can probably get links to everything you want at the Boston Maritime Museum. Also maybe a search for Inuit art and scrimshaw in general would help.
Is this what you are looking for?
If so, you may have more luck searching the net for art by specific tribes such as Tlingit, Nuu-Chah-Nulth, Kwakigiutl, or Haida. (apologies for any misspellings of those names. It’s been a while since I studied this stuff)
Good Luck!
Ah, I searched for Makah, Tlingit and Haida tribe’s art, and came up with a little of what I was looking for. I will do even more extensive searching for kwakiutl art. My search terms were to the tune of “pacific Northwest Native American art” with a bunch of other variables thrown in.
Thanks, and post more if you can find any!
