For my iPhone (3G).
I’ve looked a a lot at the app store, but it’s kinda hard to tell, without buying and trying each one, to see which fits my needs.
I need one to remind me each day at six times and (this is important) keep reminding me at set times until I acknowledge it. It would be a bonus if I could set different times each day of the week.
Typical schedule:
[ul]4:30am - take pill
[li]5:am - breakfast and pills[/li][li]9:am - snack[/li][li]Noon - lunch and pills[/li][li]2:00pm - snack[/li][li]5:30pm - take pill[/li][li]6:00 pm -supper[/li][li]8:00pm - snack and pills[/ul][/li]Each item’s alarm needs to repeat until I ack. Like Bill the Cat.
Peace,
mangeorge
I think your best option right now is just the plain alarm app that comes with the iPhone by default.
The reason I say this is because the iPhone does not currently allow other apps to run in the background - which means you would have to have this alarm app open and running at all times (i.e., you wouldn’t be able to make calls, play games, or run other apps, while expecting the alarm to go off).
However, this is something that is changing in the near future. I would bet that you will start seeing apps that meet your requirements after that new version of the OS is released.
I’ve not gotten too far into my API investigation yet, but my understanding is that apps – even when not running – can be set to receive push notifications from themselves. Probably doesn’t help mangeorge much, though, 'cos I lose all kinds of notifications with my fast fingers.
That’s partially correct - apps can receive notifications even when they are not running, but they can’t receive them “from themselves”.
The push notification has to originate from something other than the app itself (e.g., a website). The iPhone OS employs a service that runs in the background which accepts notifications, and then delivers them to their corresponding apps. So, in order for an app to perform what mangeorge needs, an “alarm” would need to be set on a central server, which would then proceed to send the app a notification when the appropriate time comes.
All I use is the basic droid alarm clock - I set it for daily, 5 am, 1 pm, 5 pm and 9 pm since that is what my various meds shake out into needing. I know I need to take my pills, so I dont forget what the alarm is actually for.
Or if you really want to get anal, you can go into the calendar and literally schedule every single pill, and it will alarm and flash a reminder of what the alarm is scheduling for. Though the smallest window on teh scheduler is 15 minutres =)
It does look like there are some apps out there that use this approach (i.e., the reminders are stored on a server, which then sends out a notification when the time comes). For example, there’s one called “NotifyMe”. I haven’t tried any of them out, so I can’t vouch for their effectiveness - but they’re as good as you’re going to be able to find right now.
Keep an eye out, though, once iPhone OS 4 comes out. I fully expect apps that can perform this duty to become more widely available after that. (Since they wouldn’t require the use of a remote server.)
Ack, according to this article, the iPhone 3G won’t be able to take advantage of the iPhone OS 4 multitasking feature that I described earlier. (Only the 3GS, etc.) :smack:
Good ideas.
I think these are probably the closest solutions you’re going to be able to find for your iPhone 3G, mangeorge.
I’ve already been doing that using my glucose app. Problem is, thare’s no “sleep” option. If I’m driving when it alarms I can’t put it off for a while. Plus, I have different schedules for weekends.
Anal I’m not. Absent minded I am.
I’m not talking to aruvqan, who’s a Mr. Smarty-pants.
