Need recipe help

I’m not sure if this is the right board for recipe requests…

I’m trying to make homemade French Onion dip. The kind that tastes like Deans or Helluvagood, not the kind that tastes like Lipton’s. All of the packets of onion soup mix taste the same, and none of them tastes like storebought dip.

I want to make it with either fat free sour cream, fat free yogurt, or both.

Any suggestions?

Fat free sour cream? Yuck!
The “50% less fat” kind at least tastes like dairy - that fat-free stuff tastes like plastic! It’s worth a few extra fat-grams to make it worth eating!

As for your actual question…I would check the ingredient-list on the kinds you like to get clues. I’ve never tried it myself (Lipton’s works for me, trailer-trash that I am  ), but I’d guess that you’d want onion-powder, fresh or dried chives, and maybe a dash of Worcestershire sauce.

Let us know what you come up with!

I agree with Bunnylady - you use that Fat Free crap, it’s never gonna taste good.

OK here you go…

1/2 tablespoon butter
1 cup finely chopped onion
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 carton (8 ounces) sour cream
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
Cook the onion in the butter (or what have you) until the onions are clear. Remove from heat and stir in the W’shire sause. Then add rest of ingredients and stir well. If using low fat, cool onions completely before adding.

That should do it.

Personally I’d add a small amount of lemon juice and maybe 1 small clove of garlic.
