I have played around with PGP and i like it alot…The only problem is that you need the PGP desktop client installed to be able to view what is on the drive…I need something that when the drive is plugged in to have a autorun standalone program to pop up asking me for the pass pharse to be able to view the drive. Similar to alot of USB sticks but i need it for a drive. Has anyone tried any programs and have any to recommend? This is going to be for a corporation so i ned something that is professional and not like something from sourceforge.net Any help will be greatly apprenticed.
Truecrypt works very well but it is scary open source stuff.
I use it on flash drives. There is an open portion of the drive with the true crypt executable that I run to mount the encrypted portion of the drive. It should be easy to also put an autorun script that calls truecrypt when the drive is plugged in. You do need administrator privileges on the PC to run it in the manor I have described.
Windows XP has the ability to encrypt folders have you looked into this?
Yes but this drive needs to be able to be used on many PCs and with XP i dont really see what the encryption does?
And what is wrong with TrueCrypt? It’s a top quality freeware application. You might be surprised by the number of corporations that use software from sourceforge.
Nope sorry. Open source and freeware are big no nos. We rather pay for soemthign that does a bad job then something free that does a great job…
The people at TrueCrypt will take your money too
TrueCrypt is the preferred encryption product for many people precisely because it is open source - anyone can read the source code and verify that it does actually work without backdoors or attackable weaknesses. This cannot be said of commercial closed source products.
However, Truecrypt has a single key for decryption. In a corporate environment, it is often the case that there is a requirement for administrative access to encrypted data as well as owned data. This increases the complexity of the product.
I’ve been involved in Safeboot implementations - works ok, has multiple key infrastructure, but relies on a network service and is pretty pricey. Plus it is not really portable in the way you want. Look at the BestCrypt family for another option. It actually looks pretty good and people seem to like it, and quotes all the appropriate buzzwords.
Si

I know i know…i personaly love free open source stuff. I mean open office is great. And media player classic plays every media file known to man and its only like 10 MB, but we can only use WMP…and MS office…And ACDCee even though IRfanview is better…
Yeah but when you’re talking about encryption and security, open source is practically a MUST since it’s the only way to be sure that there are no backdoors and that the encryption is implemented properly.
Truecrypt For The Win! (IMO)
Oh, and open source DOES NOT EQUAL free. In the purest sense of the phrase, it means that the anyone can read the source code and nothing else. As I mentioned this is imperative in an encryption implementation.
