Need suggestions for a Walking Mix

I have a nice shiny 2 gb MP3/WMA player that I would like to load up with songs to walk to.

I have a subscription to a few music sites so obtaining music should not be a problem.

I’m looking for songs to get started to, then move faster then slow down to.

What type of music, and any time frame?

Sorry, that looks odd…“time frame”…I meant any decade/era/etc?

Obviously, you must have the immortal Free Bird. Not only is it the perfect song for any event, but it starts slow before building to amplified Southern fried guitar goodness.

I listen to all types of music from classical to rap.

Strangely “The Passenger” by Iggy Pop is the best walking song I’ve come across. A song about not walking. But there it is.

Can’t omit “We Walk,” by REM. Not only topical, but it’s got a nice bouncy rhythm to which your pace will inevitably conform.

I’m probably surely showing my age, as many of my suggestions would be from the 70’s, give or take.
Additionally, I would tend to use the same stuff for a walk/run mix as I would a good road mix.
If you’re into Southern Fried Rock, as Oakminster suggests, I’d go for more Skynard, such as: Call Me the Breeze, Gimme Three Steps, I Know a Little, and Honkey Tonk Night Time Man. Then, I’d have to add my fav, Marshall Tucker: 24 Hours at a Time, This Ole Cowboy, Fire on the Mountain, I’ll Be Loving You, Change is Gonna Come, Running Like the Wind, Last of the Singing Cowboys, Cattle Drive, and…I should stop that now. I could go on and on. Then, perhaps some Charlie Daniels, Outlaws, Allman Bros, CCR, Little Feat, IF…you’re into that kinda stuff.
I have a older cassette that I loved to walk to - Contemporary blues: Delbert McClinton, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, SRV, Gary Moore, and a bunch of songs off The Alligator 20th Anniversary Collection.
I’ve got a few others w/ good Motown/Phil soul mix, and an alternative (dated) of w/ Third Eye Blind, Sugar Ray, Barenaked Ladies, The Cure, Sara McLaughlin, Paula Cole, Sheryl Crow.
Then, there’s Tom Petty…I can’t think of a better road song than Running Down a Dream, and he’s got SO much more great stuff.
Hey, that brings up Traveling Wilburys…hell, if you don’t have it, just buy Vol 1.
I hesitate to go into too much detail here, since some of the other musical threads I’ve seen contain artists and songs I have never heard of, so I feel I may be in a definite time warp…Beatles anyone???

Walking on Sunshine?

I wondered if this thread might be for GORP recipies (i.e. trail mix)

Brian

I like “Diamonds on the soles of her shoes” by Paul Simon for walking. Probably my favourite walking song ever.

“These boots are made for walkin’,” “Never met a girl like you before,” “Crazy” by Gnarles Barkley, “In These Shoes” by Kristy McColl

I like to work out to Outkast and the Black Eyed Peas, but most of thier stuff is better for faster activities than walking, although you “Hey Ya” might work.

“Walking To Do” by Ted Leo and the Pharmacists.

This is a wonderful song!

Or how about “500 Miles” by the Proclaimers?

Fat Boy Slim’s got a song I think called “You can Blow with This” (not very sure about the title). Might be the song that Christopher Walken did the kick-ass video for a few years back. There’s a line in it that goes something like. “Walk without rythm, and you won’t attract the worm.” Most of the music on the greatest hits has a decent tempo for fast walking. Not usually my favorite genre but I pretty much love the entire album.

The first song I thought of was Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made for Walking”

It’s strange: the first song I thought of as a good walking song – one that in my mind evokes being outside, being a little carefree – was (or what I thought was) “For Your Love,” by Widespread Panic. After a visit to Napster, it turns out the song is actually “Walkin’ (For Your Love).”

So there’s that.

Me too, but Renee already mentioned it.

That song is called “Weapon of Choice” from Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars

For your faster walking interlude, “Pump it up” by Elvis Costello. WooHOO!
