Need turn based strategy game suggestions, Not Steam please

So I like turn based games. The Heroes of Might and Magic Series, Warlords, Age of Wonders or World Building games like a Civ Light.
Absolutely has to be not pay to win/not in-game purchases.
I do use Gog but not Steam and I don’t want to Steam.

Any good options out there?

Honestly I would be happy with even a simple Castle of the Wind type game for now.

I don’t know if it’s turn based, but there was at thread about Rimworld that got me interested, and it’s on GoG.com

and I’ve had a metric ton personally with FrostPunk, which I play via steam but is also available on GoG.

And my ultimate previous timewaster, was the Galactic Civilization series (I play/played 2 and 3) also available on GoG (1 & 3)

Can you get the Endless games on GOG?

Endless Legend is a game much like the Civ series, but with more fantastical elements and a truncated tech curve.
Endless Space is their take on the 4X space thing. Space combats are resolved quickly: You select orders for how your fleet will fight at long, medium, and short ranges. The fleets then proceed to fight in three phases: long, medium, short. So combats can be over quickly.

Both were pleasant enough, and until Stellaris, I thought Endless Space was the best space-based 4X game I’d played.

EDIT: I took a look. I can’t find any non-Steam way of getting any of these gems. I feel a bit foolish now. It’s a pity because they met all your other requirements.

Age of Wonders 3 is phenomenal, and available on GoG (fantasy turn-based strategy game), as is the laters AoW (sci-fi), Planetfall (also good, but I love AoW3).

(Ha, and now that I actually READ the OP, I see you already mentioned AoW)

An interesting game on GoG is Thea 2: The Shattering. Turn-based, with very interesting card-based strategic combat. I have many, many hours in that one.

Rimworld isn’t turn-based, but it can be paused and slowed way down, and I’ve become obsessed with it.

I’ve found an amazing starting location if anyone wants to try: Use “green” as your seed, and find 18.21 north, 5.79 east. It’s a mountain map with plenty of beautiful marble (for keeping your folks happy) and granite (for tough defenses). The middle of the map is a large open field, bordered to the west by a river and on all other sides by thick mountains, with only a single non-aquatic entry point. And a huge chunk of the land in the field is rich soil, excellent for growing crops on.

But it’s not turn-based, so if that’s an absolute requirement, forget it.

Rimworld is phenomenal, but it doesn’t really scratch the turn-based itch. I’m also uncertain how accessible mods would be outside of Steam, and its modding community is what elevates it from really good to top tier.

The Paradox games aren’t technicallytturn bbased , but they DO scratch that itch. Just don’t pay full price for a bunch of dlc - everything goes on sale all the time.

You could get a trial month of Xbox game pass and try Crusader Kings 3. I think Stellaris might all be lb there.

Just for completeness, most Rimworld mods (not all, but most) are also posted and updated at Ludeon Studios’ forums at rimworldgame.com; you can also buy Rimworld direct (and DRM free) from there. Also, if anybody happens to need a mod that is only available on Steam workshop, I can sure make them available (I’ve put together a mod package to use cross-platform in the past).

Paradox ( paradoxplaza.com/games/ ) have their own client that can run these of their games:

Tyranny
Stellaris
Imperator Rome
Crusader Kings 3
Age of Wonders: Planetfall
Empire of Sin
Surviving Mars
BattleTech

They also have several of their older games on GoG.

Not sure if “no Steam” also means “no Epic or MSStore/Gamepass” either, if not some of their games are on those platforms too.

Thank you everyone

This looks like a big plus for me: built-in adventures editor and other modding tools.

This one looks really interesting.
The Min Sys Req might be too high my PC sadly. It might have to wait until I eventually by a new computer.

Processor is i3-4150 @3500mhz 2 cores
Ram: 12GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 1GB :frowning:

How was Thea: The Awakening? It has a lower Req?

Rimworld sounds interesting, especially as the mods can be gotten without Steam. I might need to break down soon and just get on the Steam train.

I had never actually played Thea: The Awakening. Like you, I was looking for TBS games, and just happened that the day I was looking was the release date for Thea 2, so I picked it up; worth every penny. Very surprised that the requirements for it are that high; I would not have thought so.

If turn-based tactics are your thing, Battle Brothers is amazing. You lead a mercenary company in a low-fantasy world (orcs, undead, etcetera, but you will be fighting with bows/crossbows and melee weapons, not magic), and wander the world taking on contracts, or become bandits, or hunt bandits, what have you; hire, fire, train your mercenaries, and the battles are all turn-based, fought on a hex grid. It’s punishing though; not an easy game by any means. Dead means dead; so with a bit of bad luck or poor strategy, your powerhouse fighter might suddenly find himself decapitated.

You like the same sort of games that I do!

If you don’t like Steam, I recommend Good Old Games ( GOG.com) (where for example) they have Master of Magic.

If you can put up with an MMO, I recommend Lord of the Rings Online. There is a completely free option, plus it is faithful to the books.
(I’m on the Laurelin Server if you want some in-game assitance and advice!)

I’m watching the video of Caster of Magic? Have you tried that one?

If anyone tries this map–I finally got around to setting up a defensive spot on the riverbank, and it’s a nightmare for attackers. They enter the base by slogging through an underground river, and come out into daylight staring down a half-dozen turrets on the banks. There’s nowhere to hide, and they have to swim to shore while being fired on.

And that’s what happens if I haven’t conscripted anyone to stand on the bank helping the turrets out. Add a half dozen shooters in there, and oh boy oh boy.

Thanks for that tip - I read about the updated game, liked it and have bought + downloaded it. :sunglasses:

Now there’s a minor hiccup. The game window doesn’t fill my screen.
Any ideas how to enlarge it?

Press alt+enter.

Sadly alt + enter just moves the same size window to the top left of the screen.

So for now I got Age of Wonders Shadow Magic running on my Win 10 PC.
I’ve been having fun with it.

I highly recommend Into the Breach

And praise be to a fellow non-Steam gamer, though I get all my new games on Switch, not GOG. The last one I got on GOG because it wasn’t on Switch I could have just waited a few months, like I usually do, but for some reason I really wanted to play The Longing as soon as possible which is ironic considering the game’s themes. (The Longing is not a turn based strategy game. But it is a work of art that claims to be a video game and I would recommend for those who like video games that are more than just games.)

Switch as in Nintendo Switch or something else?

My PC is older and I dislike allowing software that autostarts. So I’m not a fan of Steam and won’t use the GOG loader or whatever they call it but at least GOG gives me the option.

Eventually I’ll have to break down and go to Steam, but not until I upgrade to a new PC. Mine is 7 years old now.

Yes, the Nintendo Switch. I’ve found basically every game I want to play EVENTUALLY comes to Switch, so while I used to be a very regular customer of GOG, it’s really tailed off since I got the Switch.
