This might be the height of cynicism and is probably going to be taken as hateful, but it honestly was the first thought I had when I saw that there was a $12,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest:
There are a lot of crimes against humans that hurt people just as badly or worse than this dog was hurt, and they don’t inspire $12,000 in rewards.
I understand that this is a crime and that it’s sick and twisted. It’s also a dog. Why do people crawl out of the woodwork for animals (donating $7,000 of the reward money), but not for fellow humans?
I have to agree with you there. I don’t think that donating money was wrong in of itself, but I do think it’s wrong that human suffering often doesn’t garner the same response.
Bloody hell that’s sick - the dog story, I mean, not the reward aspect.
As for the reward thing, well, to be fair, often crimes against people do have altruistic types offering reward money*, but if it makes people feel better, why not take the view that it’s better to have this very nasty criminal found, arrested and shoved not a dungeon before said evildoer starts attacking people too.
Forgive me for not providing cites to support my statement there, but, well, it’s well after midnight over here and I don’t think my brain is up to anything constructive like that.
Supposedly, if you go to prison for child molesting, the other prisoners are really rough on you (everybody needs somebody to look down on, I guess). I wonder what happens to a dogfucker?
I think that’s just it-because it’s an animal, and because animals are well, somehow less than people. It’s seen as cowardly to pick on something so much weaker.
And let’s face it, there are a LOT of asshole people out there. Dogs, well, dogs are somehow more innocent. There’s also the cute factor.
Plus, who the FUCK would want to have sexual contact with a DOG?
I don’t think it’s hateful, it’s a valid question. For all the talk we do, we don’t value human life, especially children that much. There are over a million children that are homeless in this country and I see more ads for homeless pets than I do for that.
The Humane Society offered the reward, that’s what they do. Someone added to it, a dog lover I’m sure. You do have the police that investigate a child molestation. I doubt if pet molestation is top priority for a police department, probably offering a reward gets publicity and the only way it would get solved.
Should there just be rewards for information about people? How about stolen art or jewelery? Vandalism? Arson on a building? All are against the law and there are usually big rewards for information. You could argue the same thing about that really. I think the reason for the rewards for this as opposed to crimes against people is that’s usually the only way they get solved.
Actually people who start out mistreating animals very often graduate to mistreating people. So maybe that reward is an investment in the future, so to speak.
What’s sad, to me anyway, is that this dog was homeless for awhile. People fed it, but no one cared enough to take it in or take it to a shelter. Then something like this happens, and it’s awful, but if someone in the neighbor hood would have taken the necessary steps to deal with the stray, or fixed their dog, and not dumped the puppies (which I’m guessing is where this sad story began), it never would have happened.
I hope whoever gets the reward money gives it right back to the Humane Society, to prevent further tragedies of this nature.
