That is a shame. I was hoping the USA would keep his remains on ice or whatever until the next space mission, and shoot him to the lunar surface. Thats where he belongs. And he would never decay! Maybe shooting wouldn’t be a great idea, as who knows what the impact site would be, and some screwy people would turn the Hubble on him and post his landing spot on YouTube or something. And heaven forbid he misses enough to put him into permanent orbit.
If there is a manned mission to the moon planned, then he should be part of the cargo payload. When they land on the moon, Armstrong can easily put to rest.
(ok, it’s not that easy. But he deserves it)
In a way, this is the perfectmway for him to be laid to rest.
Can you imagine if he were buried somewhere where people would have access to him and his grave?
Sad ro say it, but it might turn into a circus. Armstrong would not want that. His whole life seemed to be spent trying to remove himself from the spotlight as much as possible.
Well, we’re not talking about Osama bin Laden here. I’ve visited Charles Lindbergh’s grave on Maui and George Washington’s tomb at Mt Vernon among the resting places of other notables and never felt crowd control was a problem.
Sure, his ashes could’ve been sent into space, if that’s what Armstrong had wanted.
He flew in space twice, and of course is known to the world because of that. But from Armstrong’s perspective it’s not the end-all be-all of his life.
He was a Navy fighter pilot and a test pilot. He married twice and had children. He was a college professor. He had many interests beyond space flight and just because that’s what we think of when we hear his name it doesn’t mean that every aspect of his life has to center around space.
