Neil Innes Dead at 75

Link.

They say suddenly. A loss to music and comedy all over the world.

Neil was a legend, a legend that will last a lunchtime.

The Seventh Python. An Outro to match his Intro. Doo-Dah, sir, Doo-Dah.

Off to Youtube.

“I’ve suffered for my music, now it’s your turn.”

:frowning: Shocked. And Stunned.

A great talent. RIP.

From Back in '64:

You may wistfully recall
How Benjamin Disraeli said that
Life is too short to be small
Or maybe like some old time song
Over all it’s long so, so long, it’s all over

So long, Neil.

Here comes the twist
I, don’t exist

Not any more I guess.

He turned up now and then on I’m Sorry I don’t Have a Clue as someone who had a “genuine” hit (compared to the Goodies’ records).

I’m pretty sure many people think Cheese and Onions is a Lennon song.

With Adolf Hitler on vibes…

As old timers on this board probably know, I’m a big fan of the Bonzo Dog Band and followed innes’s career as closely as I could.

I’m saddened to hear he’s gone.

Two of my favorite performances, both from the same episode (April 23, 1977) of Saturday Night Live:

Cheese and Onions (linked in previous post). Just Neil accompanying himself on piano.
Shangri-la- Neil backed by Howard Shore and his Bobby Blue Band. Far better than the more elaborate arrangement on Rutles Archaeology.

Both links have only the audio, but worth seeing if you have the DVDs.

A fine Rutle, hopefully he’ll find another coward up there to provide minstrelsy for.
A little macabre that I’d think of him for the first time in decades and then mention him in a post here yesterday morning.

RIP

I feel shocked. Sorry he’s gone. I want to nominate Slaves of Freedom as one of his best rather than link something others have mentioned. Or Say Sorry Again.

He was not in the least bit scared to be mashed into a pulp.

RIP :frowning:

Or Give Booze a Chance.

One of his first credits on IMDb was as a background character in the Magical Mystery Tour film. That’s a good start. (Hey, I actually like MMT.)

Of course, later, he worked with the Rutles. Neat. (And performed at The Concert for George.)

He performed (with rest of the Bonzo Dog Band) on * Magical Mystery Tour*.

The song was “Death Cab for Cutie.”
