Neil Peart is dead

FYI Sirius/XM is featuring Rush on channel 27

Brian

According to one of the obituaries I read, at least his dad and all three of his siblings are still alive. Can’t remember if it said his mom is too.

This…

Same here. I’ve been surprised over the last few days how much I’ve been thinking about Neil. I can’t think of another celebrity death that’s hit me harder, or that I’ve grieved this much over. I think the only one that might rival Neil is when Alan Parsons goes (hopefully not for a good long time).

I learned of Neil’s passing over the weekend while I was on the road, somewhere in Oregon. I got home Sunday late so was not really able to start processing things until Monday. To me, it’s like losing a friend from high school; someone you stayed in touch with over the years that reminded you of a different stage of life. The words, the music - fortunately we have all the recordings, interviews, and writings of this man. That his creativity is now silenced is sad, indeed. Neil left a positive mark on a lot of us. Thank you, Neil!

Still in denial. Fake news and all that. Think I saw something about tour dates…

Here’s a gorgeous remake of “Time Stands Still”. The band posted this to their own Facebook page.

Wow. Speechless.

My son’s third-grade (8-9-year-olds) music teacher is a Rush fan, and he’s teaching the kids “Closer to the Heart” — they’ll sing it on the spring concert, partly as a tribute to Neil.

Wow.

Do I possibly see a viral You Tube video in the making, if someone posts it?

Here’s my favorite rendition of that song.

For the record, I’m still not happy about this.

Nice. Hair up, hair down… This version deserves a mention over in that “best rock coda” thread.

Snowboarder Bo, here’s what my high school friend, a Rush fan (and then-“bandmate” of mine, though he was the only real musician) just emailed me:

“I saw your Facebook post on a cover of Rush: “Time Stand Still.” It was so sad to hear about Neil Peart. I mean, it was sad for me to know there won’t be more of his art in my future and for the loss of his friends and band-mates. But when you look at his output and impact, it was huge. He couldn’t ask for more in that department. Though I guess his personal life had some incredible tragedies (death of wife and daughter). Anyway, he lived a life to be celebrated.”

Listening to the song and the lyrics had me sobbing in the dark when my father died 30 years ago. It still hits me now.

Surprised to him mentioned in Adventure Cycling. He biked centuries between gigs and toured Cameroon and wrote a book about it. The Masked Rider: Cycling in West Africa - Wikipedia

Didn’t care for that cover. Sorry.

Still wished I’d met him. Pretty sure I passed him on a dirt road while out dirt-biking.

Wow, I prefer that cover to the original. And as a Youtube commenter mentioned, there are no drums. RIP Mr. Peart.

Here’s another drumless tribute to Rush, in this case filmed while he was still with us, that’s worth checking out.

It’s “Closer to the Heart” performed on two harps by identical twins.

Part of Lakeside Park will be named after Neil.

Here’s the song, “Lakeside Park”.
