Netflix Query

I know how Netflix works normally. I’m familiar with how to send them back, open the envelope right, etc.

But recently they decided to make my life harder by sending a DVD from Butte, MT. And the envelope wasn’t sealed up correctly. When I opened it up, I had to rip it apart to get out the DVD, instead of just tearing off the front flap like I usually do. So can I put two DVDs in one envelope and just send the DVD that came from Butte to the center in New York, NY like I normally would do? Or will it get horribly lost there?

Thanks, all.

Yes, you can put both DVDs in the same envelope and nothing will get lost in the system. I’ve done this several times. Sometimes I do this on purpose, because who wants to wait an extra day or two for their DVD to get back to Butte, MT anyway?

Sweet, thanks. I usually often end up sending two back to the same place, but the Butte thing threw me off. Sounds good, though.

Yeah, they say you can send back up to two in one envelope, but I often send 3 in the same envelope and they never say anything about it. And I sometimes get movies from other than Phoenix and I always send them back together.
Hey, can I hijack your thread to ask my own question? What do you do if you lose the red envelope? Can you put it in your own envelope and address it?

Sure, no problem. I read on the Netflix website that if you lose the red envelope, you can put it in your own envelope and address it to P.O. Box 49021 San Jose, California 95161. If you lose the white sleeve, you send it back but you include your name and email address so they know whose account to credit it back to.

The site tells you to wait for the next one and send them both back together. I don’t know what you do if you’re on a one-at-a-time plan, though.

Well, actually, I lost all 3 red envelopes. ::hangs head::

Thanks!

Or, slip it into a sleeve of another movie. I’ve done that a couple times.

It doesn’t matter what the address is on the return envelope, it will be sent to the “Nearest Netflix Facility” by a special Post Office rerouting arrangement. At least that’s what a SDMB poster suggested once and from my tests, it appears to be the case.

Netflix states clearly that they don’t care how many disks are in one return envelope, or even if you put the disks in the correct sleeves or no sleeves. So why not put two in one envelope a few times, and keep the extras by the TV as spares? I have a stack of them so I never run out.

It certainly won’t hurt to include your name & address, but how do you think they keep track of which disks are rented to which users? Thru the info imbedded in the disk, not the sleeve or envelope.

I don’t think they have any way of telling your copy of Short Circuit IV: The Revenge of Number Five from mine. The discs for the same movie should all be identical.

Occasionally, I’ve sent discs back that seem to mysteriously disappear. I don’t know if that’s because they got lost in the mail or if the sleeve barcode was unreadable or what. But there’s an option on the website where you can report a disc as sent back but never processed, in which case they’ll send you the next one on your queue. (But if you do that too often, your account will get flagged for abuse.)

What individual info is embedded in the disc itself? Does every individual DVD have a specific serial number or something?

I asked Netflix customer service about this once and their reply was, “Movies are returned to the address listed on the envelope, which is typically your Nearest Shipping Facility.” As for returning multiple movies in one envelope, their website says that you can return up to two movies in one envelope. My guess is that three movies is too heavy for the envelope.

Apparently not. I have successfully returned three in one. Four looks like a tight fit, however.

If they don’t have a serial number on each disk, how do they know who to credit for one returned without a sleeve? What if 50 of the same title came back at once?

The rare times I have returned a disk but not received credit for it immediately, there was nothing special about the mailing. I have never returned a disk without the sleeve or in a non-standard envelope. Usually the errant disk is found and my account credited a few weeks later. Only once in 2 years has the lost disk never been found.

If you don’t have the sleeve, you’re supposed to stuff two discs in one sleeve. I don’t know what would happen if you returned a disc with no sleeve, since I don’t think there would be any way to credit it to your account. (Unless it was the only outstanding copy of a really obscure movie.)

Zoggie already answered that one before.

All this information can be found at the netflix website if you login - click the Help link at the bottom of the screen, and then click on “DVDs, Mailers, and Shipping”, and finally “Lost white sleeve or mailer”.

If you lose the white sleeve: return the movie with the name and e-mail address you use at Netflix so they can credit the right account. If you return the move without the name and e-mail address they won’t know who returned it. If you find the white sleeve later you can throw it away.

If you lose the red envelope: you can put up to two movies in one envelope, or you can send it to P.O. Box 49021 San Jose, California 95161
