I hate the way it is set up now. My teenagers watch it all the time so half the movies are recommended because they have watched something. The listings of the movies are not there by genre anymore.
Any suggestions for some movies to watch? Hubs and I watch almost anything from Zombie to Kill Bill to what he is watching now …Glen Gary Glen Ross…
I think you can make separate profiles for each user.
Yeah. My husband likes it that it never recommends DW Griffith movies, nor SpongeBob for him, and it doesn’t recommend* Law & Order: SVU* or Family Guy for our son.
You can set up to five separate profiles on a single account.
Profiles don’t work on a SmartTV (or at least on my SmartTV). I don’t think they work on phones/tablets either, but I never watch Netflix on a phone or tablet. So, when my daughter watches RuPaul on the TV for 16 hours straight, suddenly my suggestions are all related to that.
It must vary between devices. Profiles work on our Smart TV and on the newer version I use of the Android app (I had to update the app on my tablet the other day because the profiles weren’t working in that older version).
For Netflix you can still go to the website and look around and then add it to your Q for later use on the viewing device of your choice. I do that every few weeks I guess.
They work fine on Vizio Smart TVs at least.
Movies that I gave good reviews for.
Horror
Wakewood
The Shrine
The Women
Perfect Host
Let The Right One In
Compliance
Pontypool
Suspended Animation
The Ante
Rammbock Berlin Underground…one of the best zombie/infected movies. Only thing is that it’s in German.
Red State
Other movies that I found pretty good.
Fargo…I’m sure you’ve seen this
The Girl…I thought this was great.
Danny Deckchair
Cook County…very disturbing ending. I had to turn it off.
The Boy In Striped Pajamas
Bernie
The Way Back
The Pianist
Worlds Greatest Dad
Goon
Extract
The Polish Bride
The Intouchables
Rid of Me
The Brass Teapot
Entre Nos
The Silent Army…some of these are foreign but I thought all of these had interesting story plots.
All my movie recommendations are inevitably very dated, but I just watched “In Bruges” on Netflix and it was excellent.
I have an older Samsung. We don’t get an option to choose a profile when we log into Netflix.
The movies we want to watch are never (well, hardly ever) available on streaming. And a number of movies recently on our DVD-mailing list are marked “Long Wait.” That never happened before. And there are a lot of movies on my list that are “Status unknown”, which is disappointing.
I wonder if Netflix has been cost-cutting by not ordering enough (or not replacing) DVDs?
With Blockbusters and Hollywood Video out of business they only competition they have now is Redbox. On the one hand they’re in a good position to say ‘you’ll take what we give you and like it’ OTOH, they’re also in a good position to go to the studios and say “if you want people to see your movies (and collect royalties) you really need to let us stream it”. Remember, if they don’t stream a movie, or stop streaming it, it’s almost always because the studio won’t let them not because they don’t want to.
I’m hoping, over the coming years, the streaming selection gets better, in their defense, it is better than it was a few years ago.
Thanks for the suggestions chicagowhitesox…and everyone else, I didnt know about the profiles as 3 come up but I thought my son did that. We spend more time looking for a movie to watch than watching the movie. Never thought to go to the site to put on a queue either.duh. Most of the movies I want to watch are only DVD available and I want it NOW.
We have a Philips, and the profiles come up. I think the come up on my son’s Android tablet. I have no idea whether they come up on Apple devices.
Have you Googled the TV model number and “Netflix profiles”? Perhaps there’s a way to enable it.
Profiles come on up on my Ipad, or on my browser, obviously.
Same here – a ton of titles in my queue now have a status of “Very long wait”, or used to and are now moved to the “Saved” category. Frustrating.
I would go batshit if the profiles did not work–I have a 4 y.o. who gets an hour or two per week of television and a wife who loves to have inane crime dramas on in the background. I’m a fan of documentaries, concert vids and the occasional movie. We also keep a ‘family’ account for all three of us and an ‘us’ account for just the adults. Works out fairly well.
It’s an imperfect implementation on my tablet, but it’s better than nothing.
Death of a Fucking Salesman
Normally I watch on a Roku*, but if I want to watch something that I don’t want fucking up the recommendations, I watch it on my PS3 instead. Why? Because the Roku only shows the first profile, but on the PS3 it shows all 5. I use the 5th one as a “garbage” profile and just delete it every so often and make a new one.
*It’s a “Roku 1”, don’t bother saying your Roku doesn’t behave the same way with Netflix, as it seems there are a lot of differences like that between Roku models.
Not worth it (especially getting around to the back of the TV with a flashlight and rattling off a 300 digit model number to someone else). The Samsung UI is enough of a pain to deal with as is, and she only uses my profile when she’s home from school.
