I’m running XP as my OS and Netscape 7 as my primary browser. My problem is Netscape closes by itself upon occasion. Most of the time it happens when I hit the back button. But at times it does it all by itself. Is there a setting somewhere that causes this?
I’d suggest you update to the latest version of Mozilla. Netscape has been based on Mozilla since version 6, it’s basically just Mozilla with a special skin applied. I’m willing to bet that your crashing problem is due to a bug in the Mozilla software itself. Go straight to the source, it probably has the issue fixed by now.
It should be noted ther’s at least one Netcsape thing, the AIM sidebar tab, that will not work on Mozilla. If that’s not a big deal for you, then I also recommend going pure Mozilla.
I really, really hate it when I ask a computer question and the answers come back, “Use such and such program,” or “Try Linux!” These suggestions really ignore the scope of the question, which is essentially “Help me get my program to work,” not “Based on your meaningless anecdotal evidence, give me your own personal preference.”
But… I’m going to do it ;). Based on my meaningless anecdotal evidence, I could never get Netscape, which I like better, to work as seamlessly and flawlessly on either WinME or WinXP as the integrated I-explorer. I had random crashes and lock-ups similar to what you describe.
Saying “use Mozilla” isn’t like saying “switch to LINUX” in this case, since Netscape 7 is an older version of Mozilla. It’s more like saying “make sure you have the latest version”.
I agree though, that is annoying when people tell you to use totally different software when obviously you want the software you are using to work.
