neurotic fashion question -- knits and weaves

(Mods: I can never remember if fashion questions – neurotic or otherwise – go here or in IMHO, so if I guessed wrong, pls. move. Thanks.

This is something that has been bothering me for a while, but I’m too embarrassed to ask anyone IRL. (How’s that for an intro? Wait till you finish reading, then you’ll really think I’m neurotic.)

I’ve got two types of fabric in my wardrobe – knits (esp. jersey type knits – T-shirts, turtlenecks, and also both skirts and jumpers of that weight and drape of material) and weaves (denim and khaki skirts and jumpers, cotton weave skirts of a lighter weight than that, button-down type shirts, etc.) Naturally, there are other things that are arbitrarily bunched into one category or the other, like a velour jumper that I think is woven but it drapes like a knit, and a rayon blouse that’s counted as a weave even though it drapes like a knit.

Knits with knits are fine (jersey jumper over a turtleneck or T-shirt), and weaves with weaves are fine (button-down shirt with a khaki skirt). With a woven skirt or jumper, I will wear either a knit or a woven top and be fine (denim jumper over T-shirt). With a knit skirt or jumper, though, I won’t wear a woven top – there’s something about the crispness of the weave over a skirt or under a jumper that just seems wrong to me. (I frequently wear sweaters – knits, natch – over woven tops, but I’m not sure if that counts as an exception or not.)

Is this neurotic or am I correctly ruling out all these possible combos? Help me, fashion-savvy dopers – I would love to expand my fashion horizons without actually buying clothes if it turns out that this rule exists only in my own mind. Can I wear the blue jersey jumper with the blue plaid button-down shirt? Can I wear the black and white woven shirt with the full knit skirt in the becoming shade of fuchsia? Since I wear nothing but skirts (dresses, jumpers) to work, this is a matter of some interest to me!

Grrr. Hamsters ate my first reply ! I will try again.

I agree with you about “woven” under a knit jumper. The woven will show “ridges” under the sleekness of the knit, unless it is fairly heavy. Woven with a knit skirt might be ok, but I’d watch out for “lumpiness” where it’s tucked in. Again, if the weights are right, it would be ok.

Conversely, knit on top with woven skirt, IMO, is more workable, and can add interest to your outfit.

Personally, I stay away from knits. I’ve too many “lumps” of my own !!! :stuck_out_tongue:
