Matt Smith was interviewed on the Jonathan Ross show last week, and I have to say he definitely lacks charisma. He was a stuttering muttering oddball, and seemed more like the First and Second Doctor combined, even though this was his real life personality.
He’s no David Tennant. But I hope this does not affect his ability to play the Doctor.
I saw the Jonathan Ross show too, I’m not sure he completely lacks charisma, but he’s not as immediately engaging as Tennant was.
Having said that IMO Tennant’s acting was 2D at best much of the time and he only seemed to have 4 facial expressions.
I’m willing to give Smith a go and am looking forward to Saturday. Personally I like his slightly geeky and odd approach, but then I liked Troughton’s Doctor too.
Having seen a few preview clips now, what really strikes me is that his dialogue could easily have been written for Tennant. And that’s probably my biggest bug bear with this new doctor - he seems to be very much based on Tennant’s doctor rather than reinventing the character.
There’s a link on that page to a clip from one of the new episodes - The Vampires of Venice. It looks interesting, though I have to agree with others here who have said that the new Doctor looks like a re-hash of Tennant’s Doctor.
looks like it premiers in Britain this Saturday. April 3
Then on BBC America April 17. Glad to see there won’t be a long delay.
I’m trying hard to keep an open mind. I “want” to like it. I’m concerned that the Doctor keeps getting younger. I hope there’s still something for the mature audiences to enjoy.
Yeah same here. I’m not really feeling the new Doctor & new TARDIS set yet. I’m sure it’ll look different in the actual episodes but it just comes across as way too sleek and youth-oriented.
Well, OK, that scene could go wrong, but this…this is what is cool about the new series: the Daleks are in British WWII camouflage, with a Union Jack below the eye stalk and, magnificently, the little light stalks they have on the top of their heads/upper turrets have little knitted blackout curtains. At least to start off with they do…
Every bloody time I watch that I have to have something pointed out to me. I got that it was an old style Dalek, but then I had to told about the little army style belt, then the rest of the stuff spoilered above
While I can make the first one make sense, the last one looks like its sole purpose is to show off the sexuality of the companion. This worries me, as that should not be the point of a companion.
I’m pretty sure the first one, of her in garters (suspenders to her), is from something else she’s done. I remember seeing it right after she was cast before many shots from filming the new series had been leaked. I would guess the second, of her not at all covered by a sheet, is also not Who-related.
But as for sex should not be the point of a companion, what show have you been watching? As much as makes sense for a kid’s show, that’s pretty much always been the point of a companion. Hello, Peri? Teela?
Um, no. There have been quite a few male companions, lest you forget, if you’re going to pull OldWho on me.
The purpose of the companion is to offer the Doctor a human touch. While that did result in a romantic relationship with Rose, and an unrequited relationship with Martha, you’ll note it did not result in anything of the kind with Donna. In fact, I don’t think they ever made Donna out to even be sexy.
I’m glad that the first shot is not from Doctor Who, and I hope the latter is not, either. The show should not be reduced to being about getting the companion down to her skivvies.
(The reason I liked the first one was that it looked like it could have been period dress. But running around in her underwear would just be pure fanservice.)
I agree, definitely more Troughton than Tennant. This was also confirmed in a recent issue of Doctor Who magazine where an interview with Stephen Mofft revealed that Matt Smith hadn’t settled on a look until after he saw Tomb of the Cybermen (a classic Troughton serial).
On the subject of Karen Gillen, I’m sure the semi clothed shots of her are from other series, not that I’m complaining though, she is gorgeous and there has always been an element of having sexy companions for the Doctor.
I too loved the homage to the original series with William Hartnell appearing on the library card. Brilliant. Hopefully the new series will avoid a lot of the Russel Davies schmaltz and stick to good sci fi stories.
The Dalek and the saucerlook good, but we have to wait until episode 3 for them to appear. Of course, they won’t stand a chance against a Spitfire (my bit of mindless patriotism:))
