New Amsterdam - Whoa!

OK, so I was under the weather yesterday and stayed home from work. I was surfing around hulu.com and decided I’d watch the New Amsterdam pilot, and 4 hours later, I had plowed through the other 6 episodes that are posted on the site. I have to admit, I was VERY impressed with the show.

With that said, does anyone know what’s up with the series for next year? I didn’t see anything on the Fox website about it, and am assuming it’s back for next year.

(And by the way, does anyone else think the Homicide sergeant (Burnett I think?) is a female version of Perry Cox from Scrubs ?)

There were some aspects of the show I thought were laughably bad. In the pilot episode when he has his heart attack and makes it to the hospital as a John Doe. Uh, didn’t the dude have a badge and gun when the paramedics picked him up? At the very least wouldn’t his police buddies have noticed a detective left the scene of a crime and is missing?

It intrigued me at first, but the later episodes have been pretty hum-drum. The story’s already gotten a bit tired and they really need to move things along but I don’t think they can.

I enjoyed Journeyman more, but alas, that one’s not coming back.

I like the show’s premise, and Coster-Waldau is sexy and fun to watch. But I thought some of the episodes were pretty bad. That last one especially, where he’s trying to find out who shot his former partner. Maybe I’m just tired of cop shows, but the flashbacks and other personal stuff about Amsterdam are way more interesting than the crime of the week.

I love Omar, but I don’t get the doctor. She obviously doesn’t believe Amsterdam is 400 years old, so she must think he’s either crazy or a liar, yet she’s still dating him?

I think the sergeant works best in small doses, like when she was ragging the cop for using his stun gun. I don’t like her weird interaction with Amsterdam’s partner.

I wonder if the writers are setting her up as the ‘alternative’ love interst for John, so as not to make Eva the doctor’s competition. I was getting a “She’s into him.” vibe from those interactions.

John definitely needs a new love interest. The doctor bores me to death and I absolutely do not want to see one more scene of those two in bed together. If the doctor really is John’s “true love” I think I’m pretty much over the show.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: make his new partner his true love.

Did they say that just meeting his true love will make him mortal? Or does he have to have sex with her before the change kicks in?

I like Omar’s reaction to the whole true love business. He’s kind of pissed at the implication that his mother wasn’t good enough to “save” Amsterdam, and, from the preview for the next episode, it looks like he thinks it’s unfair of Amsterdam to continue dating someone once he’s established that the person isn’t The One.

To me, the implication is he has to encounter her, not do the deed, as it were. He had a heart attack when he came within about six feet of a gaggle of women getting off the metro, but to me it makes just as much sense he had the heart attack because he’d recently encountered his true love: his new smart-ass partner who wanted to be part of a different division but fate decided otherwise.
