New Battlestar Galactica series in January

Does anyone object to the opening bit, with the new music? I love the dark feel that seeps from it, but I imagine some diehard fans might miss the old theme music.

I love the show, after seeing the miniseries + episodes 1-9. Can’t wait to see the rest though. I’m also going to watch the Firefly series for the first time so it’ll be interesting to see which one I like better. Hard to top the new BSG though.

Rowe:

Firefly has a different flavor than BSG, so direct comparisons are difficult. Visually, there are certain common elements; musically, they’re worlds apart, as Firefly relies upon a kind of traditional American folk music and various eastern-themed music for atmosphere.

Firefly’s greater strength (so far; I’ve only seen two episodes of BSG), IMO, is the tight characterizations, the well-played interactions between the characters, and some really snappy dialogue.

Thanks for the info…I’m almost hoping I don’t like Firefly since I know the series was canned & there’s a limited supply of episodes.

As far as the food supply discussion in BSG, I’m also pretty curious to see how they’re going to handle the needs of the civilians. I hope they don’t run into a casino paradise world like the group did in the original series. They seem to have eliminated a lot of the fluff material (like the robot dog) so hopefully that continues…

On the up side, the episodes, few as they may be, are endlessly fresh (I’ve watched the whole series beginning to end at least half a dozen times in the last six months), and there’s a feature film coming in September.

But until then, BSG is certainly shaping up to be… not a worthy successor, exactly, because the feel is so different, but a worthy holder of the “best SF on TV at the moment” throne.

I presume we’ll be starting a new thread for tonight’s episode rather than drag this one thread out to ninety zillion pages.

Of course. There aren’t many of them.
I wonder what BG will do when they escape the Cylons. Become “Lost in Space” or"Star Trek, Voyager"?
Escape the Cylons they must else they become “The Deerslayer Galactica”.
(The Indians chased us for a while, then we chased the Indians for a while, then…)

I love the old theme, & I feel its loss sharply.

For what it’s worth, the old theme made an apparence in the miniseries, just briefly

I think this week’s episode (1/21/05) shows that the show won’t be entirely dependent on Cylons. They managed to pull out a decent episode without any Cylons at all (Except for Boomer and Number 6 of course). It was cool to see Richard Hatch, though I wasn’t a big fan of the original series.

I don’t think this show will become ST:Voyager. The tone is too different. You really get a sense of the desperation and limited resources. If they eventually escape the cylons the show could become sort of like HBO’s Deadwood in space. They may or may not encounter aliens (Here’s hoping that aliens will be rare and when they do run into them they will be really alien.) but there’s plenty of potential for drama aboard the fleet itself.

Personally I like the music, which is a refreshing change from the John Williams inspired bombast of most sci-fi, and fits the overall mood of the show like a glove.

Three episodes in and I’m totally hooked on this show. I was so disappointed when it ended–I couldn’t believe the whole hour had gone by and I had to wait another week for more.

I loved this week’s episode. I like how they picked up right after the last one. They still had to figure out how to get the water up from the planet. There was no high tech water sucking up device that alleviated all their problems. I liked Richard Hatch too (though I didn’t know he was the original Apollo till this morning reading TWOP).

I especially like that the humans, still being human and all, didn’t happily put all their differences aside and blindly follow their current leaders. Nope, instead they squabble over who’s in charge and continue to carry around a lot of their pre holocaust baggage.

And Crazy Baltar is cracking me up!

That’s one reason I really like this show. Voyager never did give the sense of “Lost and low on supplies”. Instead, it was usally more “Far from Starfleet and low on coffee”. And the Maqius who didn’t like them just rolled over and became submissive pretty damn quickly. Big whoop.

They sometimes attempted to deal with this. “Year of Hell” was very nice, but a huge reset button. And then there was the two-parter with the other starfleet ship, whose name I can’t rememebr. They had been living the desperate life, and making the tough decisions that voyager should have been making all along.

Anyway, back to BSG, it looks like they are going to need to deal with the food situation fairly soon. Somebody else has already mentioned that a lot of those people have probably been living on packaged Peanuts for a week now.

Ditto; I listened to it twice last night, and I love the feel of a requiem that it has, mournful and yet ever-so-snappy with the military drumline underscoring it.

Listening closely to the music through the show, I guess it also has something of an Eastern feel to it as well, something you might here a variant of anywhere from Moscow to Beijing to Tokyo, with military-esque interludes scattered throughout.

And while I kind of dug Lorne Greene’s Grand-Patriarch/Prophet Adama, the ex-soldier in me really digs this modern Adama/Tigh combo. Edward James Almos can convey more in a look or a gesture, or just by his posture, that almost any actor in the series, old or new.

Speaking of music, last night I had the Scifi channel on basically for background noise, and there was this movie on. I can’t remember the name of it, but it had Eric Lutes and Mitch Pileggi in it, and I think it was about ants.

Anyway, I had to look up at the show, because the background music in it sounded exactly (to me) like the background music they use during Battlestar Galactica. Enough so, that I thought for a moment BSG was on. Anyone else notice this, or remember what the movie was?

I’m surprised no one has started a thread for the latest episode. BSG hasn’t already jumped the sharkurian, has it?

Well I may have, but in Canada, we’re just saw the “Water” episode so you Americans are an episode ahead.

That’s what was wondering. I kept looking for a new thread after friday’s episode, and then this thread. Did nobody watch the most recent episode or do people just not want to comment on it?

I’ve started a new thread here
