It will be released on Aug 5. I thought Ebert’s commentary on Citizen Kane was superb and would love to hear to what he has to say about Casablanca. A lot of extras on Disc 2 as well including deleted scenes and a radio production. This is a release worthy of Criterion.

I hope they do similar releases of other Hollywood classics particularly Maltese Falcon and His Girl Friday. It’s a shame that there are so many legendary films out there with mediocre DVD’s.

The most perfect movie ever made.

Excellent. I’d been holding out on buying a copy of the current version in the hopes that they’d put out a deluxe treatment. Hooray!

Warner Brothers’ 2-disc special editions are usually really good.

The Columbia Classics DVD release of His Girl Friday is far from mediocre. Not only is it an excellent transfer, but the commentary from Variety film critic Todd McCarthy is very good. Unfortunately, there are a lot of bad versions out there; maybe those are the ones you’re thinking of.

I don’t own Casablanca on DVD yet, but I imagine I will now.

But does it have the alternate happy ending as seen on the simpsons?

“Unfortunately, there are a lot of bad versions out there; maybe those are the ones you’re thinking of”
Yes those are the only ones I have seen in the stores. I think I had read about the edition you mention but it slipped my mind.

Still the point remains that there are a lot of classic films out there with mediocre DVD’s. The Philadelphia Story, Double Indemnity, Gone with the Wind are some others. Hopefully the studios will get around to them soon. The recent Chaplin releases and the Fox Studio Classics appear to be be well-done so there is clearly some interest in releasing old films properly.

If only “Our Man in Havana” would come out on DVD or video!

Or Man’s Castle. Or Love Me Tonight. Or Make Way for Tomorrow

I wish!

I didn’t care for the Ebert commentary on Citizen Kane, found it way too repetitive.

But I’ll make sure to check this out because I loved Ebert’s Dark City commentary.

I will definitely buy this version of Casablanca, which happens to be my all-time favorite movie.

Do you classic movie buffs know anything about the Marx Brothers’ films ever being released on DVD?
