Yessir, everyone, SPOOFE has managed to acquire a Pentium-4 processor rated at 2.26 gigahertz… not the cutting edge, true, but high enough up there. I WAS aiming at 2.4 ghz, but there was a great deal on a processor/motherboard combo. The mobo is a Soyo Dragon Ultra SY-P4X4… a beautiful thing, let me assure you. And on top of all that, I got a stick of 512 MB of PC-2700 DDR RAM.
Considering that my old rig was a Duron 700 mhz with 256 mb of PC-133 RAM, this should be a big ol’ boost to my system performance. My GeForce-3 Ti video card should be adequate for the time being, and my SBLive card will live for another year or so, but now the next thing I have to do is snag up another 60 gigs (at least) of HD space. Then I have to pick up a CD-RW and DVD drive for my computer (right now I just transfer files to the family computer and use that CD-RW drive). And then maybe double the RAM…
But OOH!!! I got a faster computer! Much faster. Morrowind will run like an orgasm now… not to mention that I’ve got a rig that’ll run Doom 3…
And tomorrow I throw it all together… can’t wait… can’t wait… ::deep breath::…
Congrats on the new PC! Have fun putting it together! And I must say, I don’t see much difference between a 2.26 ghz and a 2.4 ghz CPU, so it’s good that you saved some money and got the 2.26. I mean, when processors get that fast, a few points here and there don’t signify much.
So, how much RAM are you intending to have? I should think about 1 GHz would do it, don’t you? What is the maximum amount of RAM this motherboard will take?
Remember, try not to hyperventilate in anticipation of (gasp!) putting together a new PC.
Oh yeah, my own bit of geekiness: I got a low-end digital camera on eBay last night. (Just a 2.1 megapixel, by Olympus.) It was cheap, I don’t intend to get seriously into digital photography for a few years yet (I’m a film emulsion kind of girl) but I want to get my feet wet. Developing film isn’t cheap, so having a digital camera to waste on photos of our useless kittens and other non-essential pictures will be nice.
Details man! Details! What is your power supply? CPU fan (surely not OEM… pfft)? Memory?
Planning on overclocking? Why P4 and not AMD? Also, what made you choose that motherboard over the others?
Myself, I need a new video card. I have a GeForce 256 w/32 meg right now and it’s running slow. I was going to buy a GeForce 4 ti 4200 but now I’m waiting for this…
Mmm, I know what getting a new computer is like. I bought one this summer and was nearly drooling on it for a few weeks after buying it. And I still think it looks like a thing of beauty.
Currently, I’m lusting after a new video card… and maybe that GeForce FX is something to wait for, rather than buying it as a Christmas present for myself.
Don’t kid yourself. Morrowind would have trouble on the Enterprise’s computers. V-ger was coming to Earth looking for drivers that would allow Morrowind to run smoothly. If it weren’t for Morrowind, SkyTel would have run smoothly and there would have been no Terminator.
No, my son, no configuration known to man will help you with Morrowind.
's true, though. Running stuff with 256 sucks, I can’t even get Neverwinter Nights to run in a decent manner. P4 1.8, Geforce 4 ti, and it plays NwN like a lobotomized slug on heroin.
Anyone feel like donating any unwanted sticks of DDR? please?
I actually have an All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500DV, which is an AWESOME card. The 9700 is the fastest card currently on the market (nVidia claims their new one will be faster), though.
