Not that I think Putin has a leg to stand on when it comes to using that as an excuse to invade another sovereign nation, but the concept of Ukrainian Nazis is not a completely made-up one.
Well, it’s officially part of Ukrainian armed forces and it does get quite a bit of worldwide attention and support. Again, not invade-the-country level of problematic, but problematic.
It’s mostly built around the existence of the Azov Battalion:
Ukraine would probably have a lot easier time dealing with a few hundred Nazi assholes if they didn’t also have to deal with a few thousand Russian assholes trying to fuck up their country, but of course, no one wants to discuss that.
One might also note that when you’re dealing with a few hundred Nazis, who aren’t in positions of power, the recommended way of dealing with them is through police action, not blowing up middle schools with missiles.
Believing some Ukrainians are Nazis isn’t a problem, as mentioned above, because some actually are. Calling the president of the country a Nazi, though, is classic anti-semitic bullshit. It’s the way to make him look bad because the man is Jewish.
Yep. Evidently, the relatives can’t be arsed to keep their rhetoric going. The last bit of nonsense is a week ago blaming “Biden and crafts” (I’ve no idea who “crafts” is, nor do I wish to know; I suppose it could be some gas station chain) for high gas prices. Their echo chamber on FB is convinced that “the poor” get free gas cards from “the government” so they’ll vote for the left, aka Democrat.
That link to the loon…wow. Just wow. We need another term for those leaps of logic she did. Trampolining of logic? Nah. How about catapult of logic? That’s close. Is there a verb form of ‘parsec’? If so, that would be the best choice.
That’s right! We need to start bombing some hospitals and schools right here to solve that! If we can convince Putin to spare a few of his bombs for us, that can serve to distract him from Ukraine for a while.
Yeah, this. The Azov assholes got something like 2% of the vote in the last election, which is less than the People’s Party of Canada got in the last two elections. The PPC is the closest to an outright fascist party we have in Canada, so does this justify Russia invading Canada to “de-Nazify” us?
Everywhere in the world has some degree of Nazi problem lately. Ukraine’s problem is exacerbated by the fact that the Azov assholes are largely operating in the two break-away areas. You know, the places where the central government doesn’t have complete control of the area, because of the Russians meddling in Ukrainian affairs.
Probably 90% of Ukraine’s Nazi Problem was caused by Russia itself.
I haven’t slogged through the whole thread, but I found it interesting that there actually were bio-labs funded by the US in Ukraine. Of course, the REAL story was that the Russians were targeting these labs and taking them. Since the labs were researching some fairly nasty stuff, the real worry is that the Russians could use that stuff or release some of it in Ukraine, then turn around and blame Ukraine for bioterrorism. That might still be the plan. Basically, it’s taking a fact (there are bio-labs in Ukraine supported by the US) and twisting it like a pretzel (these labs actually do research from a study and prevention perspective) to the exact opposite (these labs are bio-weapons facilities used by the US because…reasons, handwave, something something…WEAPONS!).
Some of these bio-labs have actually been there and supported by the US going back to the early days of Ukrainian independence, and were initially there to try and get a handle on old Soviet-era bio-weapons, to essentially neutralize them. This segued into doing research for the US (and other countries). It’s similar to how the US was paying for research into Covid by the Chinese…the research we were paying for was research into ways to combat or detect Covid infections, not weapons development.
I heard one guy saying that this story is the classic ‘to much nuance for a reporter’, though it seems only Fox and like organizations are too brainwashed (or brain dead) to understand they are basically spewing out propaganda directly from Putin and giving his ridiculous claims legitimacy.
If so (even if not) I think it’s going to bite them on the ass this time. In a big way. Every poll I’ve seen has Americans supporting Ukraine and really negative against Putin and Russia over this thing. I think this is going to bite not only Trump but all those who supported him, especially those who publically agreed with him wrt Putin. I’ve heard that in the French presidency race this has already impacted several candidates who publically supported Putin in the past, and I think that same dynamic will happen in the US. I was talking to a bunch of conservatives (actual conservatives, as opposed to myself ) who were pretty uniform in saying they support Ukraine and are opposed to Putin. In fact, I heard the words I NEVER thought to hear from this group…to paraphrase, ‘Tucker Carlson is 100% wrong on this, and so is Trump’. While around here you’d hear that all the time, from these guys it was a shock.
Of course, they all still hate Biden, so there is that.
I think the other reason that this is getting so much traction is that it meshes well with the Wuhan Covid biolab conspiracy theory. On a whim I googled “Ukraine Fauci” and was not surprised to discover that some have tried to make the connection.
