Yeah, wear it with anything really. Does it have straps? If not, a nicely-fitting black bra underneath and a short black skirt is a great combo. Also wear it under sheer blouses, over frilly or lacy skirts, with hot pants and high boots… anything, really.
I haven’t made myself an aesthetically pleasing outerwear corset yet, just Tudor and Victorian practical-but-not-pretty stuff. I’ll do it someday.
Good corsets always cost over $100, I think. They’re an insane amount of work.
but if i ever want to give the rugger buggers a thrill, then the pav will be where i’m at!
opalcat, i forgot about the footbender.
i was sure there were pony boots, but it must have been someone else…
The website ain’t much, but I’ve seen their corsets “in the flesh” so to speak and they’re quite nice. They change their inventory every once in a while, so if you don’t see anything you like at the moment just check back in a few weeks.
Dumb question… do I even have a prayer of looking good in a corset with my teeny bust size? Or shall I just leave it to the B cups and above?
Kaio that website is crazy! I can’t believe their price on the Victorian corsets! They’re real corsets, for less than $50?!? Insane! Although I did notice that not all their corsets are legit- some have spandex in them. Guess you gotta read the fine print on everything these days.
I wouldn’t go so far as to saw I want to own one, but I would definitely love to try a few on, under the right dress of course. And take pictures. I suppose our great-great-grandmothers would probably think that modern women are insane for this sort of desire
Anybody know how much a corset with actual baleen goes for these days?
Philadelphia is a coastal city. And I have read Moby Dick a few times (I say the whale is a God indifferent to the suffering of his creatures). Lemeesee-humpback, right, blue, hmmm.
Actually, I’m rather curious. Baleen was expensive before. There’s an almost universal moritorium on whaling now. I’m beset with a vision of walking down the street on trash day, finding that somebody has thrown out great grandma’s underwear and walking off with a fortune in krill strainer.
Damn, now you have me all hot and bothered! How bout sending out pictures of you dressed?
I have two corsets, one I made one I bought, and to chemises with two overskirts.
I love the way I feel when I dress!
The dress in the picture in my sig line is one I made. A fairly simple pattern. I used the same pattern and made a second dress that is a bit darker than the first but more sturdy and I look a tad better in it since I lost some weight. I’ll have to get up pictures of that one as well soon.
Sabrinas’ mother has authentic civil war patterns for corsets, and all kinds of undergarments and she uses good (expensive) materials.
And yes, boning is a bitch to work with! Many nights of tearing out stitches and hair!
Umph. I doubt you can find corsets boned with whalebone anymore. Most boning is steel or plastic, and yes, it is a pain to sew.
The cheapo corsets didn’t really impress me. They don’t look heavy-duty enough. There’s a leather and fetish shop downtown that has lovely silk brocade corsets for $400. Sigh.
The really important thing about corsets is that if you get the right one, you can stuff your wallet, knitting, and small dog down the front for easy carrying, and no one can tell.
I’ve heard of corset kits which have all the stuff to make them.
I might try one of the Simplicity or Butterick patterns (yes, I’ve seen them-DROOL!)
I also LOVE the corsets at Yosa.com
My favorite is the Ballerina Corset. It’s soooo beautiful-especially in pink satin!
I would wear it with a black body suit and a long black flowing skirt and ballet slippers.
I would also want a regular old-fashioned corset to try and waist train with. sigh
I LOVE vintage lingerie. It’s so pretty and even though it covers you up more, I think it’s sexier, because it leaves a lot to the imagination-just little hints here and there.
Damn, I need money. Must get job. Must learn to sew.
So, I guess it would be a terrible thing to go buy a corset when what I REALLY need to be doing is paying off my student loans, especially when I don’t have anywhere to wear one… Siiigh.
I’m so jealous, though. I’ve tried corsets on, and I like feeling all snug and cozy (the sexy doesn’t hurt, either). So SOMEDAY, I want one.
That’ll be when I win the lottery, I think.
** DocCathode ** : I completely agree on the scariness of turning one’s body all funny-shaped. Also - when do we get to see you all dressed up in the flowing cape and so on? I think that might be enough to encourage me to throw caution (and money) to the wind and get me a corset.
And Kn*ckers I’m betting you maybe could talk a sewing doper into making one for you so that way you don’t have to sell the farm or forego lights and food.
Heck, I bet we could get a little Doper sewing circle going if we really wanted to…or some type of exchange.
