New corset. what now?

In a moment of sartorial madness I’ve just bought a corset, something I’ve always wanted to own.

It’s a proper victorian style one with 14 bones, lacing and metal clips at the front.
It’s made of gold brocade, and is wearable as outerwear. Just.

It does wondeful things to my body, which is 30E, 24, 34 even without lacing, and makes me feel like the heroine in a bodice ripper.

However I now have a very expensive top, and no idea what to wear it with!

Obviously, I can wear it with a long black, gold or red skirt to a ball, and fully intend to.

Is there anything else I can wear with it so that it would be suitable for going out, to a nice bar, say?

Or should I keep it for formal wear only?

Advice needed.

Ah, corsets are wonderful things.

Obviously, the long skirt will work well for formal wear.

To wear it more casually, you can wear it with a nice pair of tight black slacks and a jacket or shawl to cover up your shoulders.

Hell, if done with the right attitude, you can wear it with a pair of jeans if you want. Main thing is, if you think it looks good, go with it.

One very important thing-do NOT start with tight lacing! A proper fitting corset should feel like a nice hug-not a cage!

Just wear it laced just tight enough that it’s comfortable. It’s called “waist training”.

You could wear it with a short skirt and go clubbing!

Start the countdown…

(someone’s gonna pop on this thread with the URL to that page with the weird chick with the extremely small waist due to corset training… I did a quick search, but couldn’t find it. My guess is it’ll be here by 9am EST Monday am).

I assume you mean Spook?

I also found this: http://www.geocities.com/ther_over/cst-pg.htm

hrm I couldn’t get that one to load. Try thi sone http://www.anomalies-unlimited.com/Spook.html

Yikes! Where does she put the colostomy bag?

I’m pretty proud of that 7 min turnaround time btw.

::clapclap::

The whole corset idea intriuges me…where might I get one under 50 dollars, do you think?

No sh**, Opal! rofl - 7 minutes! You’re my new hero!

I would wear it with hip hugger leather pants.

{b]Magic8Ball**- there is nowhere on this earth that you will find a corset for less than $50. If you want something that looks kinda like a corset but isn’t at all (i.e., one of those elactic-and-shoelaces abominations) just look around at ‘goth’ stores like Hot Topic. (www.hottopic.com) If you want an actual corset, complete with boning, laces, and eyelets, you’ll have to go to either a specialty store, or an upscale lingerie boutique that also specializes in bondage gear. Corsets cost anywhere from $200-$1500 depending on sizing, how they’re made, what they’re made of, and what you want them for. (You can get them for a variety of different things, like waist-training, fetish, bondage, formal events, historical reenactments, etc.) Those other sorta-looks-like-a-corset things you see in Victoria’s Secret catalogues are also not corsets- even though some of them have actual (although usually plastic) boning, they’re really just merry widows or basques trying to cash in on the fad.

I currently have 6 corsets, the cheapest of which was $175, which was an absolute steal from a Civil War reenacting supplier. It’s chunky, ugly canvas, and is not anything you’d want to go to the ball in, but it served its purpose when I was reenacting. I have a few brocade and silk corsets, which were a lot more money than anyone should reasonably spend on a piece of obscure formalwear, but hey, I’m a big fan.

I have to second Guinastatsia’s warnings- don’t start tight-lacing! If you really want to start waist-training, you have to go very slowly and make sure you know what you’re doing. But there are lots of surces to find out more- try www.darkgarden.com for some neat corsets and practical waist-training advice. (And also to get an idea of just how expensive these things can be.)

Watch out! Corsets are addictive! Even if you never actually wear one in public, you’ll feel so neat just owning one that you’ll want another. And another. And another… Plus, most women look really great in them- my b/f loves mine.

Another really cool thing I’ve seen people wear with their corsets are these knee-length tulle skirts that kinda remind me of ballet attire. I’ve been looking everywhere for one with no success. Bloomers are also cute. But I prefer to wear mine with a floor-length skirt. Just feels more ‘authentic’.

If you’re trying to get a corset on the cheap and you know someone who sews well, Simplicty has patterns for some nice, basic corsets. Click on “winter catalog 2002,” then “costumes” and then “period costumes.” Several of the pattern packages in there include corsets. I think Butterick has a few in their costumes section, too.

Warning: you want an experienced seamstress to do these. Working with boning is a bitch and a half.

There’s some gorgeous stuff in generall on those sites–Guin, there’s a few outfits I think you’ll swoon over. I did, at least

When I enter through the castle window, cloak flowing about me in the night wind, hood hiding my face in shadow save for my wine-colored lips and square chin, the light glinting off my bracers and boots, stride defiantly toward the pale quivering maiden, and hungrily rip off her bodice with my rough, frenzied hands

I like to find a woman underneath.

Should I find some bizarre, corset crushed abomination, who has remade her body with wire as though it were a bonsai, the walls shall echo with the sounds of my retching in disgust rather than roaring with pleasure.

Corsets, bodices and the like can be wonderful things. Using them to permanently reduce your waist is unsafe and unhealthy. I was wondering how this was different from footbinding. Then, Spook revealed that she’s practicing that too.

A corset is meant to make a woman look like a woman, not some Barbie-like parody of a woman.

I'm sorry if I've veered into Pit ranting here. But, Spook's site and the fact that there are so many like it have deeply disturbed me.

Re-Op
The only way to know for sure is to get a full length mirror and/or a group of friends and try things on. IMHO, the possibilities are limitless. A good corset goes with everything from satin skirts and glass slippers to faded jeans and combat boots.

now, now, the spook link was uncalled for (she still wearing those horse boots? i couldn’t bear to look)…but weirdly necessary.

doc cathode, did you see what size i am?
that makes my body barbie-esque anyway, the corset just makes it look like there’s a REASON i look like barbie!.

don’t worry guin, the big boobs prevent tight lacing, as overspill is not pretty.

liking the idea of leather trousers or nice jeans…

(i got my corset for about $120, the boning is plastic rather than metal, but otherwise it’s pretty good, and it comes from upmarket lingerie shop, rather than weird spook-like dungeon)

wear it down to the Pav.

Mmmmmm… Boobie overspill…

Spook didn’t wear pony boots, she wears ballet boots. And uses a foot bender.
::shudder::

What now?

Model it for me, of course. :stuck_out_tongue:
