Exactly.
I really appreciated your citations of US State Dep’t travel adivsories regarding those Negro hellholes of West Africa. However, in the interests of completeness, please allow me to append these advisories concerning some of Europa’s ostensibly nicer spots:
ITALY:
“CRIME: Be alert to the possibility of carjackings and thefts while you are waiting in traffic or stopped at traffic lights. This has been a particular problem in Catania, Sicily. Use particular caution driving at night on highways, when thieves are more likely to strike. Americans have reported break-ins of their rental cars during stops at highway service areas; thieves smash car windows and steal everything inside. Theft of small items such as radios, luggage, cameras, briefcases, and even cigarettes from parked cars is prevalent. Vehicles parked near beaches during the summer can be broken into and robbed of valuables. Lock car doors whenever you park, and do not leave packages in your car in plain view.”
BELGIUM:
"CRIME: You should be aware that small groups of young men sometimes prey on unwary tourists, usually at night and often in metro stations in Brussels. These thieves typically seek small, high-value items such as mobile phones and MP3 players. You should carry only a minimum amount of cash, credit cards, and necessary personal identification (see Special Circumstances, below, for acceptable forms of identification). We advise U.S. citizens to avoid wearing expensive jewelry and watches. "
And my own beloved Ireland:
“CRIME: There have been a limited number of assaults on foreigners and tourists, including violence toward members of racial minority groups. There have also been several reported assaults in Dublin by small, unorganized gangs roaming the streets in the early morning hours after the pubs close. There has been a high incidence of petty crime in major tourist areas—mostly theft, burglary, and purse-snatching. Thieves target rental cars and tourists, particularly in the vicinity of tourist attractions. In some cases, purse and bag-snatching have involved physical assault or violence, especially in Dublin.”
Yikes! Looks like I made the wrong choice moving to this barbarous continent. Maybe I should move back home? Then again…
USA:
"Safety and Security - Crime:
* Do not leave your door open at any time.
* Avoid wearing expensive jewellery and carrying valuable items in run down areas.
* Do not sleep in your car by the roadside or in rest areas.
* Avoid leaving items on display in cars.
* Try to stay on main roads and use well-lit car parks.
* If hit from behind while driving, indicate to the other driver to follow you to a public place and call 911 for Police help.
Violent crime related to the drugs trade is a major issue in the Mexican states along the border with California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Though some foreign nationals have been among the victims in the border region, there is no evidence to suggest that they have been targeted because of their nationality. Visitors to border areas should exercise caution and follow the advice of local authorities."
What to do, what to do…
