** I’m going to use a lot of Everquest jargon here. If you want anything explained just let me know**
I know there are a few SDMB EQers out there, so I’ll post a micro-review for the newest EQ expansion. This is all IMHO, so please don’t flame me too bad
I’ve been on and off the EQ wagon now for years, mainly re-enabling my account when a new expansion comes out only to find that it’s more of the same and quitting again. I guess I was searching for that “WOW!” feeling I got when EQ was young and everything was fresh and new. I’ve never found it until now…
This time Sony has done it right. Everquest’s newest expansion, Lost Dungeons of Norrath , is perfect for a casual player such as myself. I’ll spare rehashing the technical details, as they are mostly in the link above, but the dungeon crawling experience is very refreshing and makes EQ exciting again. Since mobs don’t respawn, you know your back is safe and you only need to worry what is beyond that next door. Each mob can drop some neat loot, and there will be at least one drop per adventure worth rolling for.
The experience is decent, however you could make more if you want to do a boring camp. The good thing is that in LDON, you are too busy to care about your XP. More than once I’ve heard someone go “Holy cow, I’ve dinged sometime but I didn’t notice…” .
As a casual player, I find that the 90 minute time limit is great… I know that pass or fail I will be able to log off in a few hours. However, by the time you get a group, prep, complete the adventure, and then roll/split the loot after the adventure is done, you will find that it’s close to 2.5 hours per adventure.
There are still a few things that could use some improvement though. Containers (chests/clay pots/etc) can now be opened, but they are often locked and trapped. This is OK by itself, but the traps are not scaled to the level of the party. It’s not uncommon for a 20’s group to get hit with a large AoE 500 pt DD and 2k DoT trap. This is a wipe for pretty much any group under 60, so chests are never opened any more. The loot from chests is usually not great anyways, so risk vs reward is really unbalanced.
Long story short… try it, you’ll like it.
