New Evil Dead movie

It looks pretty intense and gory: Evil Dead Rise – Official Trailer (Red Band) - YouTube

Looks okay actually, lots of blood and a chainsaw too. Not seeing much inventive craziness or humour like Evil Dead 1 or 2 but it’s only a trailer after all.

I saw the remake or whatever that came out 2013. I thought it was pretty good. I might check Rise when I get a chance.

I thought Jan Levy did a great job and I was hoping she’d come back.

No Ash, no care.

Is this a reboot? Is it supposed to fit in with the other movies or are they supposed to be ignored?

I genuinely don’t know. I don’t THINK it’s a reboot, but that’s just a sense from what little I know.

I liked the Jane Levy movie, so I’m okay with another Ash-less Evil Dead.

I recognized the possessed mom but couldn’t remember her name. IMDb to the rescue: Alyssa Sutherland, who I knew better as Queen Aslaug from Vikings.

At the risk of Deadite-ing this thread, I caught the movie today.

It’s an absolute SPLATTERFEST. Easily the goriest out of any of the Evil Dead movies. The practical effects are well-executed (especially with the ultimate Deadite that appears in the climax, which is foreshadowed by one of the first things the main Deadite says after becoming possessed) and it does a good job of keeping you on the edge of your seat. It’s mentioned that the Necronomicon in this movie, which has a unique look distinct from the classic version, is one of three volumes of the Natorum Demonto - the impression I get is that this movie, the 2013 reboot, and the original trilogy are all set in the same universe, with each one revolving around a different volume. There’s certainly a setup here for a sequel hook, which seeing at this movie has already made back ten times its budget I fully expect to happen.

It’s apparently already getting a digital release this week, so catch it if you can.

What does digital release actually mean? Is that like pay-per-view?

It’ll be available for purchase on Amazon this Tuesday. It’s presumably going to be on HBO Max as well sometime next month.

When it comes to splatter, I appreciate movies that go extremely, hilariously gonzo with it. Re-Animator is one of my top-five horror flicks; Bride of… is not far behind. And Peter Jackson’s Dead/Alive is another fave. I love it when I can tell as an audience member that there’s joy and playfulness on the part of the director. When endless viscera are chucked onscreen but it’s done grimly and without much humour, I find it dreary and boring.

I didn’t like the 2013 reboot at all. Just unrelenting violence wasn’t enough for me, and I just felt sorry for the characters. But I thought Evil Dead Rise delivered on the fun. Thre was a lot of fan service, some truly impressive effects (I wistfully thought there was way too much CGI, but no getting around that, I s’pose) and the performers were fun and engaging (and quite good actors, which helped). I dug it, and I hope there are more, in a new variety of settings.

The Bruce Campbell cameo (“It’s called the Book of the Dead for a REASON!”) got a smirk out of me. Apparently, the director intended that to actually be Ash Williams stuck in 1923 somehow.

I’m really looking forward to this and glad it is getting a streaming release soon.

The Marauder was mostly practical, which I guess is why only got a few brief glimpses of the whole thing.
