I know the PTBs here generally scoff at adding a new forum to our quaint little community, but it seems that it would make a lot of sense to have a separate (sub?) forum for the constant, incessant, weekly TV show threads. Yeah sure they fit under the guise of Cafe Society, but at any given time the front page is littered with weekly discussion threads of almost any currently running show out there.
Hey, I’ve got nothing against those threads (though I admit “incessant” and “littered” may have negative connotations). I just think things would be a lot more organized if they were sequestered away…quarantined, if you will.
It’s unfortunate that those threads are so abhorrent to you that you would prefer they be banished to an area where you’d never go . . . lots of people feel that way about other kinds of topics.
Some folks find certain areas so distasteful they offer them up for deletion. “If you removed the _________ forum then the server would run more efficiently,” that sort of thing.
Not everyone likes everything. We hope we offer something for most everyone. One person’s trash is indeed someone else’s treasure here and we would hope you’d give others the same consideration you’d like for yourself.
I like the SDMB’s “fewer is better” philosophy when it comes to subforums. It’s also a best practice for message board administration; having fewer, but more active subforums makes a board look busier than those with many less active subforums.
Maybe the whole thing would be less troubling if there were only one forum named “Words.” But as soon as that one went up, somebody would insist there be another for “Pictures.”
Or, to put what Tuba said somewhat more, um, positively, I would think the only reasons to have a new sub forum are:
You cannot find the threads you seek because they don’t fit under a current forum’s description,
The membership would be better served by reorganizing the threads into their own forum so that those who enjoy them can do so more easily (such as with the proposed gaming forum), or so that the others who use the current forum can find the threads they want without having to scroll off the front page,
Hi Opal!
In this case, while Cafe Society certainly has a fair number of such threads, they aren’t totally overwhelming the forum’s front page, and they definitely fall under the description of what to find in the Cafe. Thus, they don’t seem to be in need of relocation to a “quarantine” area of their own.
I like the idea of a smell-o-forum. Maybe we could get Slug Signorino to do an illustration of our mortarboard-festooned fearless Master sitting at a computer with enormous nostrils, inhaling various vapors being emitted from the Olfactoramplifier.
HalBriston, I think you might be on to something. Not sure. You might just be pulling the wool over our eyes.
My two cents? Cafe Society was an excellent idea, but any sub-fora would really start to get crowded-feeling.
