Usually the “commercial” threads involve those of the hated variety (Pepsi Girl, et al), however what about the ones that make you giggle or at least aren’t painful to watch? My recent faves:
-
The one where the guy is sitting in his office using the computer and yells to his secretary, “I was on the internet, now I’m not…what do I do?” She yells back, “Call the guy you called last time that happened” He picks up the phone and says, “Scotty? It’s Daddy…!” That one always cracks me up.
-
I also like the new Bud commercial where all the guys are saying “Howyadoin’?”
-
The one where the lady says a long loving goodbye to all the freaks in the laundromat when she gets a new washer and dryer.
How about that James Earl Jones’ Patton-inspired international plan commercial for Verizon? “Now that’s commercial pitching done right”. The other ones in the series are not nearly as inspiring.
Then there are those hair-gel commercials by the company that shall remain nameless, in which you “see it–do it”. Good concept, but the models are so thin and lifeless that Callista Flockhart is yelling at them to eat someting.
I don’t have cable currently, so I am not up on the most recent commercials… but one I will never forget was a TiVO commercial starring Joe Montana and Ronnie Lott. Both men were on a golf course, discussing jock itch. Funniest commercial I’ve seen in a long time!
I must agree with simply_cats, that is hilarious. Also, I love these new Cingular Wirelss commercials. The one with the old man training all the football players to dance is hysterical.
…how about that commercial where there is a lady, and she sees a deaf kid moving in across the street? Then she goes on the internet to try to learn some sign language. She goes over to the kid’s house, gives him a pie, and signs a message. The subtitle reads “Here, I baked your dog for you.” I cracked up laughing the first time I saw that. I don’t remember what it’s for, just some internet connection thing. And I’m amazed deaf people haven’t gotten it off the air. But it’s really funny.
Why would deaf people watch TV?
There’s a little invention called “Closed-Captioning”, which helps out many deaf people who desire to watch TV with their hearing counterparts.
The one that consistently cracks me up is the Pepsi commercial with Brittney Spears. Bob Dole appears at the end, watching her on tv at home with his dog: “Easy, boy.”
Bwahahahah!
(Plus, I’d MUCH rather see her tongue on my tv screen than Hallie “Gene Simmons” Eisenberg’s. Bleah!)
You are a tree!
You are a redwood!
Eh, you are a sapling!
I love that commercial, can you tell?
I think the best commercials come on during NASCAR. My favorite so far is for UPS. One of the UPS executives is trying to convince Dale Jarrett to drive the UPS truck instead of his car. They are both sitting on the infield and the exec is pretending to race a toy UPS truck around the track. He is making vroom-vroom noises, when the camera shows Dale slowly shaking his head no.
It’s much better to see it than read it, so you’ll have to trust me that it is hilarious.
I love commercials and get a kick out of many, but the current winner for me that had me literally in tears with aching sides was a beer commercial (was laughing so hard I can’t remember what beer it was… perhaps the commercial is a little TOO good). The one where the guy opens milk and the cat shows up, dog food and the dog shows up, a beer and three friends magically appear, then a bag of chips and the huge friend appears. I didn’t see it coming and it just slayed me.
Zoggie, a lot of them also know how to read lips.
Anyhoo.
—The cat orgy commercial was freaky, and I think I might enjoy that for quite sometime.
—I can’t believe that Bob Dole, Britney Spears and that dog are all so hard up for cash that they’d make a joke like that. Or were they just too innocent to notice it?
—I downloaded this one about this British fish company that wants fresh fish so badly it sends people out to attack bears (bare handed mind you) and take the fish they catch. When they guy kicked that bear in the ***** I nearly spit my teeth out!
OH MY FARGING GOD!!!
I went to adcritic, oh, btw, [hijack] and watched the #1 video, which was for tampax, and I thought that the pussy episode of That’s my Bush and every episode of TV funhouse were in badhouse but oh my god!!! I’m afraid to go to sleep now, if you watch it BeWaRe!![/hijack]
I think it’s an SUV commercial or something like that…
A group of men, wandering the woods, return to camp and find bears going through their tents. The men huddle together, scream “Let’s get 'em!” and chase the bears away. The punchline is something like “You just can’t take a man’s salad.” “Word up.”
Indeed. I like the Conseco one where it shows scenes from races with no sound, interspersed with titles on a green background:
“Some people say it’s not a real sport”
“That the drivers aren’t athletes”
“That it’s just a bunch of guys driving around in circles”
“Say what you want”
[view from up in the stands where you can see the fans wearing ear protectors, and the cars coming around the turn in full, glorious Dolby Surround]
“We can’t hear you.”

And the “How bad have you got it?” NASCAR ones–dad times himself changing the tire on kid’s tireswing; dad cuts square out of kids’ badminton net to put over car window; family (in station wagon) pulls up to restaurant, get out of car through windows; son holding camcorder over dad’s shoulder as they drive through town, then watch the tape on fast-foward when they get home.
