Well Dunk called him “not particularly gifted with sword” because HE could beat ser Arlans ass. You have to be pretty decent to live that long as a hedge knight, which is basically an unionized mercenary.
I thought it would be the opposite of being a “unionized mercenary”. As a hedge knight typically doesn’t belong to a house or sellsword company, they wouldn’t have much collective bargaining power.
I mean keep in mind “gifted with sword” means someone like Jaimie Lannister or Barristan Selmy.
Yeah, maybe not the right comparison. I meant someone barely a step above a mercenary, like a more official mercenary.
A certified mercenary.
Yes, that is exactly what I was thinking of.

I thought I had read The Hedge Knight too, but I can’t find my copy so maybe I was confusing it with something else.
You might still have them, they are just not published under their name as they were included in anthology books instead. They are in the books Legends I, Legends II, and Warriors.
Edit. It seems this changed in 2015 and there is now a single contained novel with all 3 stories called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. (I can’t believe I just described someone 10 years old as “new”.)
I downloaded the Kindle version of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms the other day and read the Hedge Knight story. I believe this first season will cover that story, and presumably the other stories will be the subject of the next seasons. (I read someplace that George R R Martin shared notes on further Dunk and Egg stories with the showrunner, so if the show lasts long enough, it will get past the published stories.)
There were also comic adaptations of the stories which is how I read them.
I had forgotten this were the rules of the joust, it’s been a while since I read this stories. Given this, it sorta dumb to have all the notable knights go on the first day, and all the scrubs later on.
I think the notable knights can still challenge on subsequent days, they just have the first day reserved for them exclusively.
Episode 4 is out and it was fantastic. For the unspoilt, how have you enjoyed the various reveals and twists of the last two episodes?
That was so freaking good.
I have so little patience for shows I can’t binge now. 14-year-old me would be stunned. I read the books so long ago, I know which things will work out OK and which won’t, but have no idea anymore of how they will work out exactly. So I’m essentially unspoiled - just safe from the worst of the suspense.
The only thing I knew going in was who Egg was. I didn’t even realize it was supposed to be a twist so I’m glad that got resolved fairly early on. Otherwise I have no idea what’s going to happen next, other than presumably Dunk won’t die in the next episode.
They said the same thing about Ned.
Ned comes from a book series called Game of Thrones, not Dank and Ned.
Any predictions from the unspoilt? Who wins, who lives, who dies?
I’m guessing one of the Targaryens dies and that squire that just got knighted dies.
Well I assume Dunk’s side has to win because there’s two more Dunk and Egg novels and unless the rest of the books are about Egg carrying Dunk’s severed head around and talking to it he doesn’t get executed here.
I hope the rowdy Baratheon guy lives, he’s hilarious.
I’m guessing he either kills or is killed by his cousin, maybe even by accident.
The noble knight guy with a broken leg is way too honorable to survive in Westeros, he’s dead for sure.
Just so I have my family tree right, the Targaryen that decided to fight on Dunk’s side is the King’s brother and Egg’s uncle, right? And the prince who challenged Dunk is the current heir to the throne?
