Oh, I was very, very pleasantly surprised. Great in-jokes and references, and the Hulk does talk. He talked in the first movie, too, for that matter.
I agree with ArizonaTeach. I thought the movie was great. Good amount of homage to the tv series. Cameo by Lou Ferigno. On screen appearance by Bill Bixbie. The even worked in the original theme song from the tv series, and the introduction was about as close to the opening scenes of the tv show as you could get. I thought Norton did a great job, although they didn’t touch much on the loneliness that BB must feel all the time. Overall an enjoyable movie that I’d easily see again. I mean come on…they even worked in “Hulk Smash!”. Who can’t like that?
I caught the new Hulk movie at the matinee showing this morning. I really can’t say if this version was better or worse than the first Hulk movie; it was just different. If anyone caught this scene, was it Stan Lee as the old man who drank the adulterated soda? Also, what was up with Liv Tyler’s lips? It looked like she got her lips so big they could be used as flotation devices.
Mrs. Rhymer, who is occasionally almost unspeakably filthy minded, claimed that Tyler’s lips were swollen from servicing her beloved’s gamma-ray influenced member.
Anywhistle…I’m on the fence about. I rather enjoyed that it was as much a reboot of the television series as of the franchise in general. But I miss Ang Lee’s psychological probings, which was, to me, the best part of the first movie; and I also thought the first CGI Hulk more impressive. I seriously disliked the climactic battle with the Abomination; not only did the two combatants look computer-generated (as is inevitable), but so did the backgrounds.
As far as him not talking, I have to agree. There’s simply no way anyone could deliver “You want Hulk smash?” seriously.
Me problem with the effects are the physics. They’re simply not believable. Even if the CGI resolution is higher than real life pictures nothing the size and mass of The Hulk could ever possibly move that fast or be that agile. Its like watching a CGI elephant tap-dance or gallop. Regardless of it being ‘photo-realistic’ your brain simply says 'No! That is not real."
Red Dragon was a do-over of sorts, since the book had already been made into a mediocre movie called Manhunter and with Brian Cox playing Hannibal Lecter. A fine actor, but no Sir Tony.
Manhunter? Mediocre?
Class.
Ok. Lifelong die hard Hulk fan chiming in here with my comments after my viewing last night.
Though I do like Ed Norton I preferred how Eric Bana played the role.
Jennifer Connelly in Hulk was MUCH MUCH better looking than Liv Tyler in Inc. Hulk. By a long shot.
I thought the CGI Hulk in this movie was quite good. The only times he looked like he was clearly CGI was when they showed his face up close, but he looked so close to the comic book that I was very happy with it. People who complain that he doesn’t look real confuse me. What does a real life Hulk look like? I also liked, and still like, the Bana Hulk from the other movie even though he looked shrekish. They both showed huge strength and power and that’s all you can ask for.
I thought they made the right choice showing Hulk emote in this movie, like when the Abom. got back up to fight at the end and he sighed and looked sad to have to keep fighting. Same for when the heli spotlighted him at the the end and he looked sad. Just like the comics. All in all even though his face never stopped looking CGI I think he emoted really well and showed pain and rage effectively.
I loved the part where he got mad at the thunder. Really showed his savage side.
The Abomination looked perefect. Wouldn’t have changed anything about him.
Hulk didn’t seem to get stronger as he got madder though. I was dissapointed in that.
The fight between the Abom and Hulk was awesome. They definitely lifted entire parts of the fight from the Hulk Ultimate Destruction video game, like when he chopped the cop car in half and used it as boxing gloves and when they climbed up the buildings etc… Still I really liked it though.
Not sure why they ruin the suprise cameo by showing the 5 second scene in the damn commercials though. Maybe to draw in the Iron Man crowd?
All in all I really liked the movie. The beginning was kinda slow but once he started fighting it got good. The Hulk fighting the army in the desert in the first one is still the best fight scene but Inic Hulk fighting Abom was great too.
Oh, I forgot to add the only area of this movie I didn’t like and that was William Hurt as Thunderbolt Ross. Sam Elliot was BORN to play that role and played it perfectly in the first one. Hurt played him way too evil, which he never was in the comics. He alawys used questionable tactics in his obsessive hunt for Hulk but he never disregarded Betty’s life like he did here. Elliot also looked exactly as you would expect Gen Ross to look.
I quite enjoyed it. Not as much as Iron Man, but I liked it.
I liked the homage to the TV show.
I thought it was occasionally slow.
Can someone spoil the Tony Stark cameo? As soon as he came on, every-damn-body in my theater started murmuring and I couldn’t hear what he said.
I liked how they set up the next villain.
All-in-all a fun flick.
Well, even if we’ve never seen a Hulk in real life, I think people expect it to look more or less like a real flesh and blood creature, rather then a cartoon. But the Hulk was created to look good in comic books, I’m not sure there is any way to transfer it totally successfully to a live-action film (other then going the “spray-paint a body-builder green” method, which has its own problems), and for what its worth, this Hulk looked better then in the previous movie, if for no other reason then they toned down on the bright green.
I liked it to, but for the opposite reasons. From what I was hearing, they made it sound like it was going to be one long two hour CGI fight sequence, which sounded boring to me. But I thought they actually struck a good balance between Bruce Banner bits and The Hulk bits.
My one complaint was that it featured one of my top movie pet-peeves, otherwise intelligent characters who will expend thousands and thousands of rounds on a monster/alien/whatever long after it has become obvious that that creature is impervious to said weapons. It was especially egregious in this movie, since not only were they not hurting the monster, but they were spraying a large college campus and two major metropolitan cities blindy with bullets. The off screen civilian death toll due to friendly fire must have been in the hundreds.
I thought it was ok, better than the first one, at least. I did think it got ridiculous at times, like when the army was rolling tanks across a college campus and strafing it with an Apache gunship.
In my theater, the biggest applause was for the surprise cameo at the end. The eventual Avengers movie is going to be either the greatest fanboy epic or the most preposterous cheesefest in the history of movies.
Yeah, one of the real hurdles will be the casting of Cap, which will have to be dead on, not just for his movie but for Avengers. Not a job I envy. Tim Roth was excellent and creepy, and as a geek I enjoyed all the “cameos” of people in the Hulk “world”, like Doc Samson and The Leader.
I’m quite the opposite, I liked Ed and Liv much better than the fist one (“I can’t get too excited.” poor guy). Hulk on the cliff with better was great, really showed hsi hair-trigger and Hulk vs. the world side. I believe his voice was Lou Ferrigno.
Thing is, I’m not sure there’s really that much depth to be mined from the Hulk. Guy has monster inside, he gets mad, Hulk Smash. It’s Jeckyl and Hyde and that’s it, really.
And does this mean Stan Lee has Hulk powers now?
That was Lou doing his voice. I was happy they had him do it and he sounded great.
I caught the Leader cameo but where was the Doc Samson? I must have missed that part.
Also, I don’t think the rumored Avengers movie will ever happen. This new trend in having big name high $$ actors in these hero movies is going to make a team up cost prohibitive.
I did like the CGI hulk from the 1st one and still do. But I agree that the green was way over the top compared to this hulk.
Doc Samson was the guy Betty shacked up with after Bruce left. Even if they don’t use him again it was a nice bit.
I could swear in the trailers there was interaction between Samson and Banner. I hate it when they do that.
As far as the cost of the actors, my understanding is that most of these people are signed for three picture deals (as the norm) and the expectation is that The Avengers will be the third movie. I know that’s the thinking for Iron Man.
Wasn’t the Avengers movie already announced as a done deal? I don’t think it’s just a rumor.
If you look back in movie history, you’ll find that there seems to be an occasional trend for a movie to be made, then another movie from the same source a few years later, ie: *The Last Man On Earth *(1964) and The Omega Man (1971), both based on the Richard Matheson novel I Am Legend.
About the only thing I didn’t like about the movie was the Hulks casual disregard for human life. I’m not that up on all the lore, but I thought one of the big points about the hulk was that he didn’t kill anyone. Yet this hulk had no problem smashing soldiers left and right.
Oh, and was there anything at the end of the credits like in Iron Man? I wasn’t sitting through them all…it took 15 minutes to get to that short 1 minute segment in Iron Man. Not really worth it in my opinion.
Right. It was only made so the studio wouldn’t loose the movie rights.
