New Jacob Dylan album - Really good. Who knew?

I listen to the NPR live concert series podcast, and just listened to their concert with Jacob Dylan promoting his new album Women + Country.

It’s freaking great stuff!

No, seriously, this is great folk/alt country. Neko Case, Kelly Hogan and Paul Rigby perform with him…and my jaw is on the floor it’s so good.

Where did this come from? As far as I knew he had his flash in the pan with the Wallflowers, who were good but not great, and then he disappeared. But I guess he released an ok solo album a little while back with Rick Ruben (which I haven’t heard anything from, so who knows it might be great too I just read a couple of reviews), and then this. This is *great *music. The song that starts at around the 9 minute mark in the linked concert is giving me chills.

Who knew? Has he been on anyone’s radar?

Prompted by this thread I’m listening to it now. I actually liked some Wallflowers stuff, but just hadn’t thought about him or them in a long time. So far I’m enjoying it. Thanks for the tip.

I know this will peg me as hopelessly middleaged, but how to consumers of digital music get the equivalent of liner notes? I went to Dylan’s website and found lyrics, but not who played bass on track 2.

T Bone Burnett is an amazing producer (and musician, of course). He just seems to bring out such depth from the artists he works with. There’s a joy and openness and profundity to the sounds of, for example, “Raising Sand” by Alison Kraus and Robert Plant, and in the soundtrack to “Crazy Heart.”

Part of the reason I enjoy the records he’s produced, including this one, is that you can hear the space they’re in when they record. These albums never have that engineered, overly-compressed sound that’s so common right now. Love love love.

I am not really surprised. I too liked the Wallflowers more than many people.
