Recent CD Purchases?

There may be a similar topic to this, but I scrolled and scrolled and didn’t find one.

So, here goes.

What music have your recently purchased? I buy a lot of music, but I’m always looking for new names.

In the last week I bought:

Gillian Welch’s “Soul Journey”–depressingly fabulous
Damien Rice’s “O”–Good, but not what I was expecting.
Franky Perez’s “Poor Man’s Son”–Really good. It pop/rock, but it’s done well.
:stuck_out_tongue:

Ace of Base, Greatest Hits
King’s X, Black Like Sunday
Rain Fell Within, Refuge
After Forever, Decipher
Within Temptation, Mother Earth
Ministry, The Land Of Rape And Honey

Okay, ultrafilter, let me see if I got this right. First there is this:

And then, there is this:

?

Hmmm.

Greendale, Neil Young & Crazy Horse
The Wind, Warren Zevon

That’s right. I’m an old guy.

Last week I bought “Blacklisted” by Neko Case, and I haven’t stopped listening to it. Neko Case is a girl singer in the alt-country genre (which I once heard referred to as “y’allternative”). She is Canadian, she’s a redhead, and she’s drop-dead gorgeous.

And on “Blacklisted,” her third album (but the first one I’ve heard), she just about slays me with sultry, smoky, sad songs about love and loss and madness. The songs all exude a dark, cinematic quality that I love. Neko sounds like classic country singer Patsy Cline one moment, and alternative music vixens like Tori Amos or Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval the next.

Neko also sings in a Candian pop-rock group called the New Pornographers (who took their name from a quote from Jerry Falwell, who said “music is the new pornography.”) I discovered them first, with their brilliant second album “Electric Version,” and that led me to seek out lovely Neko’s solo work. The best songs on “Electric Version” are the two she sings lead on: “The Laws Have Changed” and “All For Swinging You Around.” Apparently there is a video floating around MTV2 or MuchMusic for one or both of these songs, but I’ve never seen it.

Anyway, I’ve always been a fan of rockabilly music, its punk-inspired offshoot psychobilly, Western swing a la Bob Wills, old honky-tonk style country, surf music with its twangy, reverb-drenched guitars, and anything by Johnny Cash, Tom Waits, and Mike Ness (of Social Distortion fame). Now I’m getting into alt-country music in a big way, thanks to these other influences. For the first time in years, there are a ton of artists I want to check out, and new CDs I want to buy. Of course Best Buy doesn’t carry the majority of them, and we don’t have a hipster indie record store in Miami (believe it or not).

Kathleen Edwards is a Canadian whose music has been described as “Alt-Country”. I’m not a country music fan but I love her album “Failer”, another recent purchase. (I didn’t know anybody thought of it as Alt-Country when I bought it, I just knew that it had great lyrics, pretty melodies and frequently ROCKS!)

Highly recommended. But you don’t know me and I don’t know you.

“Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy” by Mindless Self Indulgence just a couple weeks ago.

Before that was…“Adrenaline” by Deftones a few months ago. Money hasn’t exactly been flowing for me lately, so my music collection hasn’t been expanding as much as I’d like.

You sure about that Canadian part? She was born in Virginia and considers Tacoma, Washington home. She lived in Canada for a while, but not any longer. cite

I saw her open for Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds last year, which was my first exposure to her music. I also dig Blacklisted, especially the title track.

Sounds like you’re at about the same place I was early last year. My favorite out of the bands I’ve discovered is Sixteen Horsepower. If you love the depressing, moody sound of Blacklisted you should definitely pick up Sixteen Horsepower’s Folklore.

I’d also recommend Tarantella, Myssouri, Molasses and Trailer Bride.

Korn…
hey it seemed like a good idea at the time!

Sacrilegium and randwill, I’ll definitely look into your alt-country recommendations. In particular, I’ve heard nothing but great things about Trailer Bride. What I’d love is a gift certificate to just go crazy ordering CDs from Bloodshot Records! Their website has been a wealth of information and provides great reviews and info about their artists.

The Darkness debut album, which I haven’t listened to yet.
The Thrills - So Much for the City
Ocean Colour Scene - North Atlantic Drift

I was feeling nostalgic all week, so it’s mostly stuff I loved in college but had to sell back the CDs to pay for textbooks or food.

Poi Dog Pondering - In Seed Comes Fruit. They keep changing, and they lost me somewhere in the past couple of years, but I like the first track on their new album a lot. I haven’t heard the rest of it yet.
Manu Chao - Clandestino. Kept meaning to buy this one, but it’s now out of print; I had to buy a used copy online. It’s one of those albums you have to listen to the whole way through.
The B-52’s - Wild Planet and Mesopotamia. Bought via the Apple Music Store.
Fishbone - Truth and Soul. How could I possibly have traded this CD in? It’s a classic.

Evanescence - Fallen

My Private Nation - Train

Dont think I bought anything else recently

Lewis Black- The End of the Universe
Undercover S. K. A.- We’ve Come For Your Daughters (my friend’s band)

Loaded- Velvet Underground and man do I like it.
