I’m a big Kevin Smith fan but I have mixed feelings. Smith has already retired the characters twice. Bringing them back a third time seems a little desperate. And his recent movies have been bad.
But the reason his recent movies were bad is because Smith has inexplicably been making horror movies. This is going to be a comedy, which is where Smith’s strength lies. And the first time he brought the characters out of retirement, the result was Clerks II, which I regard as one of his best movies.
Kevin should just accept his role as a commentator on movies, not a maker of them. He’s made a couple of interesting movies and can deliver some quirky fun dialogue scenes but his movies, on the whole, are pretty lame and uninteresting. I think my brother phrases it “he’s a fanboy who got lucky”.
Eta: though maybe a Jay and Silent Bob movie is mostly accepting that and just keeping his creds current. No one, including Smith, is thinking this will be much of a money maker.
A Kevin Smith movie is close to a sure bet. Pretty much all of his movies have made a profit (the only exceptions have been his horror movies and Jersey Girl, which was his attempt at a big budget movie). Because Smith knows how to make a movie for a low budget; good dialogue is cheap. So he can make a movie for ten million dollars and it will make twenty or thirty million dollars.
Smith may never have a blockbuster like Avengers: Endgame. But he’ll never have a failure like Mortal Engines either.
Are you saying this as somebody who has enjoyed past Kevin Smith movies but thinks this particular one looks bad? Or as somebody who isn’t a fan of Smith’s works in general?
Dogma is one of my three favorite movies of all time. I can recite the entirety of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back from memory. I have seen Clerks 2 at least 50 times. I cannot count the number of times I’ve seen Clerks. Heck, I’ve watched episode 5 of the Clerks cartoon so often that my DVD just starts playing it automatically when I put it in the DVD player. I’ve seen every Comic-Con speaking gig he did, some of them multiple times. I think it’s fair to say that I’m a fan of (some of) his work.

Links to NSFW material must follow the two-click rule; that is, a reader must have to click at least twice to get to the NSFW material. The easiest way to comply with this is to put the link into a spoiler tag, as I’ve done.
This shit looks so terrible honestly, I mean maybe I’ll check it out anyway, he shouldn’t have tried to make a sequel or retooling or whatever to jay and silent bob strike back but rather put them in some entirely new situation or something. I’m a fan of the characters and some of his movies, but this looks like the most uninspired dreck he could have shit out.
My buddy told me this last night, but I was tired when I got home from work so I just found an article about it now: do y’all know why this movie got made?
