I’m about 70 miles south of Albany. Was standing at a desk on the first floor of a college building chatting with someone and neither of us felt a thing. But the two people on the second floor came rushing down–“Did you hear that? Did you feel that? I think that was an earthquake!”
From which I infer that latitude matters. But so does altitude.
I noticed a lot of shaking. It did not occur to me that it was an earthquake. I assumed it was a police helicopter flying to close or the attached restaurant’s ac unit acting up again. Both happen far too often and cause rythmic shaking of the building.
Strange. I am in Manhattan on the UWS and did not feel a thing. My parents out on Long Island texted that they felt an earthquake and I have no idea how it totally passed by me?
When we had the one back in 2011 I definitely felt that one!
It was definitely a surprise to feel the concrete floor of my underground bunker rumbling and shaking!
I was on a conference call and after checking with others in my family to see if it was felt across town (and not just some huge truck), we talked about it on the call, and people across NY, PA, and NJ on the call all reported feeling it. Wow!
I didn’t notice anything. I’m up on high ground on a bed of soft soil. Never felt an earthquake. One back in NY in the 80s IIRC, woke up my wife who woke me up but I didn’t feel the quake. Actually that one was also centered in New Jersey on the Ramapo Fault. Spent a year in the LA area, minor quakes everyday but nothing I ever noticed. The day after moving back east a noticeable quake damaged buildings where I lived. Back in San Francisco a few weeks later, luckily went home just before the big one that took down the elevated highway there. Glad I didn’t feel that one.
Barely perceptible sway in DC, only one in the office who felt it. Was sitting in front of a screen quietly and very still and perceived a certain gentle effect as of a ship-on-wave, first thought I may have had an incipient dizzy spell. Then got the news blip.
Took a quick walk around/through the house to make sure there were no issues. There was a slight line on the ceiling over the hall bathroom shower. Then I realized there was a clear plastic bag sitting on the toilet seat lid which was acting as a bit of a mirror for the little bit of sunlight that was coming thru the holes in the blinds where the cord runs vertically thru the slats. Almost had a heart attack until I realized & strategically moved my hand & the ‘crack’ disappeared.
Don’t see any damage other than that chair. It’s a shame, that was my favorite chair of the set.
I happen to be in the same county as the epicenter. It felt pretty strong. The duration surprised me. My initial thought was a huge truck driving by. Since I’m on a dead end it’s not likely. Then it kept going and I realized it was an earthquake. I missed the last one everyone felt because I was driving and it wasn’t that strong here.
