New member "groups" question.

I frequently click on a “welcome to our newest member [name]” link at the bottom of the page. When I do, I see three classes. Guest, Regestered user and Banned.

What is the difference between a guest and a registered user?

And who is the mod who is apparently faster than greased lightning at banning some of these (about 25% it seems) newly registered members? That mod deserves a second coffee mug or maybe even a SDMB shot glass.

The ratio of new members to quickly banned new members seems rather high. Is this normal, or are we passing through some type of meteor shower?

A registered user is someone who has done something like changed their password or email address but has not yet confirmed the change via their email.

There have been A LOT of spammers lately signing up just to post streaming games (?) and some ever-watchful Dopers have been zapping them almost immediately (running coach, I’m looking at you).

It’s actually all coming from one small group located in Bangladesh.

And running coach says otherwise, but I’m convinced he has a post report hotkey somewhere on his keyboard.

Or maybe the call is coming from somewhere IN THE HOUSE!

I mean, have you ever seen running coach and the spammers in the same room together?

I don’t zap 'em. I’m the guy with the laser designator.

You’d better rest, the weekend’s coming. And it’s a three-day, holiday weekend.

I’m just getting warmed up. cracks knuckles
