Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Didn’t see the first FF movie because the reviews sucked, and characters (Dr Doom specifically) were all turned around from canon, but this might be interesting. Who plays Galactus’s voice?
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Didn’t see the first FF movie because the reviews sucked, and characters (Dr Doom specifically) were all turned around from canon, but this might be interesting. Who plays Galactus’s voice?
I think Leonard Nimoy might be right.
Doom was not done well in the first FF movie, but the heroes were. Ignore the reviews and get yourself a copy. If you like the FF for themselves, you’ll like the movie.
Wait! Last I heard David Hyde Pierce was doing the voice of the Silver Surfer… Lame… Who’s this ponce?
And the first FF movie is flawed BUT they absolutely nailed the Torch and the Thing. Nailed them. Alba is hot and that’s about it… if ever there was a role in a super hero movie for Reese Witherspoon… its Sue Storm. I understand that her star is a little too bright now but man… five years ago it would have been perfect. Ioan Gufford (sp?) was passable as Reed.
I did really like the final battle because it literally lasted two, three minutes. I was shocked that they didn’t drag it out. That might have been a budget call though to save on the effects budget.
Shoe-horning in Alicia Masters was unnecessary.
This is the guy who is going to play Norrin Radd?
Yes, but he’ll be the body actor only. Some other actor will do the voice. just like he did Abe the dish guy’s body in Hell boy and David Hyde Pierce did the voice. Plus he works with a lot of body suits and prosthetics (one reason they choose him is his super skinny frame can work with special effects add ons).
That’s AWESOME. They don’t even have to paint him silver, he’s perfect just like that.
“Watch out Earth, Galatus is soooooooo going to sit on you!”
I agree that they nailed Torch’s attitude, but I wished he could have been a little younger - he looked the same age as Reed.
Chilkis was voice-on perfect for the role, but the makeup didn’t look right without the rocky-ridge brow.
Ioan Gufford also passable, but I thought the role called for more of a “stringbean” type build. I was rooting for Guy Pearce.
I think Charlize Theron would have made the best Sue Storm. Attractive, but still believable as a big-sis, motherly (in a good way) influence on the team dynamic.
I thought a talented but otherwise unknown actor from eastern Europe would give Doom the best characterization.
As for the story, I was really disappointed with the original. It had so much potential, but turned out so “blah.” I could go on and on, but I’ll spare you all and stop hijacking the thread.
So the FF is doing a beach movie now?
Well, my four year-old will be thrilled - she loved the first FF movie, even has a FF poster hanging on her door. I’m pretty sure that Johnny Storm (the “fire guy”, in her words) was her first movie-star “crush” - the way her eyes got all dreamy whenever he was on the screen was a hoot to watch.
Having read the first few collections of Ultimate Fantastic Four since the movie, I wish they’d just gone with that continuity. I don’t mind having Doom’s origin linked with the FF’s, but the way the movie did it, making the accident Reed’s fault, didn’t work for me at all.
Ultimate FF’s Sue is an improvement over pre-Byrne Sue, as well, though I don’t think Jessica Alba could’ve made her believable as anything other than arm candy.
Will the unreleased film they made in the early 90s evey come out?
Just let me correct some misinformation here. First of all, Doug Jones is NOT officially confirmed as the Silver Surfer.
But I can tell you that his ongoing projects do NOT use any green-screen leotard, mo-cap or reference capture AT ALL. It is prosthetic work, and he is not ‘just a body actor.’
Incidentally, Doug has just finished providing the voice in the two new HELLBOY ANIMATED films, and is in talks to reprise his role as Abe Sapien in HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY, and this time he will be playing ALL of Abe, body AND voice. The reason he was dubbed in the first film by David is merely because studio suits wanted a well-known voice for the part - and it didn’t work particularly well, so Doug, who is a classically trained actor by the way, and has worked as ‘himself’ in a number of films and TV appearances, will finally portray Abe the way he should be played.
Oh, and if anyone wants to see Doug in his latest film, check out Guillermo del Toro’s PAN’S LABYRINTH - he plays the title role and also the creepy ‘Pale Man’, working under heavy prosthetics in both roles and also having to deal with huge reams of dialogue in Spanish, a language he doesn’t speak - and he did it perfectly. The film is heavily touted for an Oscar nod.
So a little less of the derisory remarks, guys - if Doug DOES play the Surfer, you couldn’t have a better actor in the role.
And if you’re wondering about the uber-plugging here, you’ll just have to deal with it - I’m Doug’s webmaster, and I know how bloody good he is.

He plays a labyrinth? Damn, he is good.
Welcome to the boards, HM. Check the place out, kick the tires, stick around.
And people forget “Robot Arm’s First Law of Superhero Movies” at their peril.
Welcome to the boards, Hell. Just curious, did my linking to a pic on his website tip you off to us?
I was just pokin’ fun at him. I really liked him in Hellboy.
At the risk of extending a tangent, I liked his work in Hellboy, too. I listened to the commentary track on the DVD, and one of the actors mentioned that, in a scene where his character was floating in a tank, the actor was actually suspended in the air by a harness. He had to move his body in such a way as to create the appearance that he was moving around underwater. The illusion was remarkable.
Yes indeed, Doug did the Rubiks Cube scene on his birthday, upside down in a harness. With Dougie being somewhat on the lean side the harness was pulled very tight - and at the end of a 10-hour day (after 7 hours of makeup) the blood was running down his back from the raw places on his hips.
Oh, and before I forget - he’s a HUGE Silver Surfer fan, the “restless, streaking stranger from the farthest reach of space”, and he would just LOVE to play him.
HM
PS - thanks for the welcome!!!
Hmmm … how did I know where you guys were? I’m the Hellmistress - I have my methods …
HM
Dang, don’t you have an edit facility on this board?
Oh, and as for the labyrinth … anyone who has played bugs, fish guys, fauns, Imps, zombies, a multitude of aliens and a book salesman would find portraying a labyrinth a doddle. You’re darn tootin’ he’s good.
