I laughed. I think it mostly captures the tone, though Neeson is necessarily different than Nielsen. Nielsen was never physically intimidating; Neeson has that in spades. I don’t know yet how that will work for this style of comedy.

That is classic Police Squad right there.
It seems to be following in its predecessor’s footsteps in another way. The original Police Squad series and Naked Gun movies were very much in the spirit of the cop shows/movies of the time (just look at the Police Squad opening credits). This seems to be a spot-on parody of current gritty cop dramas and action movies…like many of Neeson’s own!
I’ve come across a comment or two saying that Neeson’s not meant to be a comic actor. But they seem to have forgotten Leslie Nielsen started out as a dramatic actor himself! (His character in Forbidden Planet was very much a proto-Captain Kirk.)
From the trailer, I like the scene where he unintentionally rips the guy’s arms off.
I’m less thrilled with the recurring gag about crapping his own pants (or whatever digestive issue he’s having).
I’d like to have more pun-ish, “Shirley, you can’t be serious.” Type jokes.
It’s certainly not the same style as the original Police Squad, but I hope it works anyway. The Spirit Halloween banner going up over the door was pretty great.
Now if we can just get the original TV series on a streaming platform (for free of course!) I’m surprised they haven’t figured that out yet. I guess I could get out my video tapes, one of the first sets I ever bought, but then I’d have to find a way to play them.

So many bad comedies out there, it would be nice to have a very funny one.
