New "Naked Gun" movie starting Liam Neeson

Ok that made me laugh a few times. Much better than the first trailer.

Was that Weird Al coming out of the bathroom? Must be, surely.

No. I thought so too the first time I watched the trailer linked to in post #109. Look at 49 seconds into the trailer. I replayed it several times and stopped it at that point. It’s not him.

No, definitely not. But it should be, since Al was in all three of the original Naked Guns.

By the way, I do not approve of the title being just The Naked Gun, without any sort of subtitle or modifier.

Someone on YouTube suggested The Naked Gun: Son Of A Gun.

Yeh that’s why I assumed it must be. Surely he’ll be in the film somewhere.

I’m willing to suspend judgment, but I’m inclined to feel the same way about anybody trying to replace Leslie Nielsen in the Naked Gun franchise as anybody trying to replace Peter Sellers in Pink Panther remakes – you can’t replace the irreplaceable.

Yeah, if they don’t try to replace him but instead let Neeson be funny in his own way, it’s will be better.

So if someone persuades you to go see the film despite your misgivings and you discover that it’s the greatest movie ever made, you’ll decide that you must be insane. No sane person could possibly think that the irreplaceable had been replaced. You would then check into an insane asylum exepcting to stay there for the rest of your life.

Yeah, the thing about the three NG movies…they aren’t as funny as you might remember. When I watch them now, I’m like, “weren’t these better?” Oh sure, there are still hilarious parts, and chuckle worthy parts, but there are also cringy parts, and parts that just drag.

For comparison, Airplane! for me is still awesome. I’ll probably try this new movie even so.

Not at all. I would just realize, with great surprise, that one of the most consistent and predictable trends in the entire history of movie-making had finally been broken.

I’m willing to give it a try. Neeson isn’t one of those actors whom you can easily pigeonhole; and while he’s mainly done dramatic roles, they have been quite varied.

Plus, Leslie Nielsen and George Kennedy had a long career in dramas before moving into comedy, so why not Neeson? As long as he can manage that pair’s deadpan responses to absurd situations, he should be fine.

The thing that concerns me is that Neeson seems more menacing than Nielson was. If the humor takes this into account, it should be ok.

I mean, I think everybody has noticed that, so hopefully this is taken into account by the writers.

Of course he’s played non-threatening characters before, like in Love Actually.

As he observed himself in the Life’s Too Short improv scene:

No one’s going to believe me as a fucking greengrocer.

Of course he will, and don’t call me Shirley.

(Someone had to do it)

The TV show was better, as IMO the comedy style was better suited to the shorter, episodic format. Alas, it died too soon.

I saw the trailer for it at the movie theater today. Liam Neesom was just fine, but the jokes seemed a lot dumber than before. Like geared toward a 10-year-old instead of a 15-year-old. I really enjoy the old Naked Gun, but I only chuckled once. Hopefully the actual movie is better than the trailer.

Have you seen the naked gun movies recently? I think nostalgia can be a factor, as a lot of the jokes are probably dumber than you remember.

That’s true. I haven’t seen them recently. I saw Airplane! not too long ago and thought it held up. And it’s true that not every joke is going to hit its mark for everybody.
