I am going to New Orleans mid-March with my brother, to celebrate his 50th birthday. We have both been there numerous times and have our favorite places to eat. I would, however, like to make a reservation at a top restaurant for a special dinner. My budget usually precludes me from trying these places, so my experience is limited. I know the names of a few of the landmark places (Commander’s Palace, Brennan’s, etc.) but I don’t know which are just well-known and which are actually* good.*
If anyone has recently experienced any place they would highly recommend, I am all ears (eyes.) I was looking at the tasting menu at Commander’s Palace and it looks great, but they also mention they prefer jackets for men at dinner and we will not be packing jackets.
I am not sure how you define ‘top’ restaurant, but Jacques Imo’s is one we always try to make it to when there. Not black tie by any stretch, but a very fine meal.
I liked Commander’s Palace, though I only went for lunch (the 25 cent martinis are hard to beat). I can confirm that they are picky about the dress code, and will definitely kick you out if you don’t meet it (though they might have jackets to loan you; I’m not sure about that). My sister ended up with a gift certificate after they treated her somewhat badly with regards to their dress code.
Here are some places that have great food and don’t require a jacket and tie:
Cochon - This is a high-end Cajun restaurant in the warehouse district. They make everything in-house, including pickles and cured meats. Their food tends to be hearty. Anthony Bourdain loves this place.
Rio Mar - A seafood and tapas place, also in the warehouse district. I highly recommend their ceviches. The prices are quite reasonable for a place with such good food.
Borgne - A seafood place in the Central Business District. Their oyster spaghetti is one of the best dishes I’ve had in New Orleans.
GW Fins - Another seafood place, this time in the French Quarter. Their lobster dumpling appetizer is really great. They specialize in wood-grilled fish. They also do a good job with vegetables.
That is a place I have meant to try on previous visits. I’ll look at the menu.
.25 martinis?? That sounds dangerous… Unfortunately my body proportions don’t lend themselves to a loaner jacket… but thanks for the confirmation.
I was looking at R’Evolution as an option. They are in the Royal Sonesta, Hotel I think? That’s where the Desire Oyster Bar is too, which is always on my “stop for a quick bite” list. The Oysters Desire is one of my favorite dishes in all of New Orleans.
I have been to their sandwich shop next door and loved it. This is definitely an option.
