New Orleans

Ok so I went to New Orleans with my fiance’. I had a blast thanks to you fellow dopers! Drank me some hurricanes, had me some Beinets and nearly puked when I got to Bourbon street (and NOT becuase of drinking).

Anyway I was wondering, what exactly is the scam where the street people tell you where you got your shoes from? This happened to me, more than once, and I never took the bait.
A street person would come up to me and say “I bet I can tell you where you got 'em shoes from”, and I would say “good luck” and keep walking.

So what is this ruse they pull??

They say, “I know where you got your shoes.” You give them the money and they say, “On your feets!”

Real amusing, huh?

Ah, you know I thought it was something like that.

I was in NO recently, a guy came up to me and a friend and told me he could name “the store * got my shoes from” and how much I weighed, for 5 bucks. I hemmed and hawed a bit, not committing. As I did this, about 3 other guys formed a circle around me and my companion. We left quickly.
That doesn’t answer your question though…

AlaItalia got it. On your feets. Pretty annoying to us part-time residents, but apparently a lucrative scam.

The reason I know about this is this happened to my ex-husband seven or eight years ago, maybe more, who kicked himself for days for being so gullible. I wasn’t with him when it happened, his parents and I had walked ahead on the River Walk, and I’m surprised he even told us, he was so embarrassed. Thanks, ex-hubby, for allowing us to learn from your mistake!
