New Rule Proposal about Thread Series

Inspired by Mr. Moto’s current “war heroes” threads I-VII currently in MPSIMS, as well as others in the past. (The “Top 6@6” in Cafe Society a while back is a good one, too.)

Would it be possible to change the rules to limit this kind of thing to one thread, with a second if the first gets too long? I’m just not sure we need fora littered with threads about the same or similar subjects started by one individual. I certainly admire Mr. Moto’s commitment to his cause, but a series of threads is a bit much.

I actually kind of like it for some things. Certainly the ‘Ask the Gay Guy’ stuff was a series of threads and it’s some of our finest hours, there.

Admittedly, that became a series because they grew too long. But I think the principle applies. If the threads are worthy I don’t see the problem.

Example: Would the lack of series threads lead to the gathering of the ‘Enterprise’ threads in CS into one spot? If so how do we reconcile that with the endless ‘Diablo’ thread in that same forum that was closed for being too long?

It’s a mystery!

Ah, but the Diablo thread was reopened, because it was determined that thread length now no longers has any adverse affect on the servers. So nowadays the Ask the Gay Guy thread would have just been 1 thread.

I like series(es?) of threads, especially in Cafe Society. For instance, the “24” threads and the Enterprise threads. Some people don’t get to see the new episodes when they are aired, but still want to talk about the show. If they participated in one long thread, they’d be spoiled the minute they walked in. The only other alternative would be to make everyone’s posts in spoiler boxes, which is horrendously annoying in a large thread.

I can see the need for separate threads in CS.

However, as I said, I’m not sure we really need regular threads on what is essentially the same topic. Yesterday, I was trying to find a thread in MPSIMS, and had to run a search because the front page had so many of Mr. Moto’s threads.

I didn’t realize it was a problem. And I certainly wasn’t trying to be a jerk about it.

I’ve received a lot of positive feedback about those threads.

At any rate, the series is winding down. (Only one more war hero to go.) I don’t anticipate doing another one. If I ever decide to, I will surely keep these issues in mind.
