New rule proposal

When did ATMB become the Pit?

askeptic, do not use personal insults outside the Pit.

Liberal it looks to me that in your posts about politics and ethics, you’d find a lot less opposition and frustration on this board, if you’d make it open at the outset, every time, that one of the things foremost in your mind is the American indigenous peoples.

Sorry Lib and Frank. If it makes any difference I was gigling when I typed it. It was not meant as an insult but rather friendly teaseing. I mean who could type “Doofus” while trying to be seriously insulting?

On a more serious note, what the hell are you on about Lib? Why are you trying to censor the board. Fine you don’t like Old Hickory, state your objection and move on. This OP is silly. Even for you.

Do you have a cite for all of these threads where people are glorifying Andrew Jackson? In the immortal words of Lenny Bruce, “Before there is a rule, there has to be a problem.”

What is this really, Lib? If you want to Pit Andy or teach us why Andy was a bad guy, do it in the appropriate place. This is very disingenuous.

Can you see my house from up there, Lib?

It just seems like a personal philosophy that would carry over. I consider myself fairly socially libertarian, and on this board think moderation should basically be limited to removing spam and obvious trolls, and the two seem obviously connected.

It does make a difference. Apology accepted.

Well, it’s just a proposal, not a demand. I just dislike revisionism being defined as trusting the history written by victims more than the history written by victors. The Indian Hater might not have murdered as many as Hitler, but that was only because by the time he got there, the millions had already dwindled to thousands. There is an ongoing thread about racism in which it is asserted that the delay of Afro-centric social studies until the seventh grade is racist. From where I sit, the racism (if any) is pushing Indian studies down to the fourth grade, where marchers on the Trail of Tears can be seen as cartoons by children who haven’t yet learned to think.

But the argument made here is a sound one. It is I, and not the thread, that should move to the Pit. My apologies to those who were upset by my proposal.

I agree with your stance as to Andy Jackson, but I also think that it is a PIT issue or at least GD. Why suggest a rule in ATMB that is philosphically based? I wish you would reconsider your decision about the PIT, I understand your reasons but I miss seeing you around. I rarely agreed with you and sometime was exasperated but I think it is a poorer place without you.

This was so apt that I thought it bore repeating.

If we’re going to have a rule that “all threads supporting a person who hates a given group of other people must be posted in the Pit”, then we’re going to have the Pit clogged up with threads in support of people who don’t happen to think that Ann Coulter, Saddam Hussein, and anti-Harry Potter Fundamentalists are all eeeeeee-vil.

Or do you think it ought to be a rule applying only to Andrew Jackson?

In which case lemme get out my list of Pet Peeves That We Need Rules About…

???

You seriously don’t think we should debate things like this? That there’s no room in Great Debates for subjects like this? That the villains of history are all cast in black and white, so to speak, and there are no Gray Areas where we could calmly discuss whether a given villain might have actually had some good points, or might have actually done a teensy bit of good? You don’t think we should even talk about that?

I see.

Nice to have one’s villains all neatly packaged up, I guess.

Somehow, you missed my admission just above your post that the arguments made here are sound ones, that my conception was misguided, and that I apologized for offending people like you with my proposal. But as you say, “Nice to have one’s villains all neatly packaged up, I guess.”

Well, I don’t see why philosophically based proposals should not be made. That’s what so-called hate speech is, isn’t it? Anyway, thanks for reaching out to me. And I never said that I would leave the Pit forever. But for now, I’m better off keeping away from it.

So, have all the forums changed?

I mean, if we’re discussing politics in ATMB, can I debate the sexual orientation of Hitler in Cafe Society?

Only if you include a list of his favorite show tunes.

Done.

By Og, they’ve made it into a verb now!
But why did you feel the need to do turkey impressions when you were typing?

'Cause I can’t spell real good…duh.

Not many people know it, but the Fuhrer was an excellent dancer.

I think “The Lottery” is one of the great horror stories of the pulp era.

The pulp era?

“The Lottery” debuted in The New Yorker in the June 26, 1948 issue.

Neither pulp, nor era.

It was a joke. I didn’t research it.
