new season of Castle

Cancelled first season - Firefly
Flash warp - BSG
Cheesy chatch phrase - Galaxy Quest
Hammy star - Star Trek:TOS

It was a pastiche of any number of shows.

Just before that line he also referred to the show as (from memory):

“The show was on, what?, 10 years ago and ran for 12 episodes.”

Agreed, but all of those shows are well-remembered and highly regarded; whereas *Andromeda *had that cheesy off-brand Trek ambiance, never received any critical respect or geek cred, and has largely been forgotten. In terms of geek culture *qua *geek culture, I think it’s the closest match.

Plus, the captain was seriously Sorboesque.

I have to say last night’s episode (the documentary of the rock band) was by far the worst episode ever. I hated it and barely made it through.

Camera shake? Got it.
Ridiculous mugging for camera? Check!
Boring plot? Yuppers.
Just-in-time call from higher-ups allowing the filming to continue? Oh, yeah, baby!

Hell, in on scene where everyone is sitting in the station discussing the case, the docu crew would have had to had at least 8 cameras to get all the angles they were showing. And the crew would have had to have been invisible.

It sucked.

Agreed. The ‘hamming it up for the camera’ was embarrassing.

Plus they music from ‘the band’ was god-awful.

I stopped watching it after the first few minutes.

I can understand why they’d want to try something like that, but no, it doesn’t work for a show like Castle.

Another “Andromeda” connection was through the Creavers, described as beast who would eat your face off. When that show came out, one of the characters was a type of creature who were known for being crazy monsters that eat people. He had found religion, and was reformed. He was in for season 1 before they wrote him out. IIRC, he went crazy and ate someone. Or else they went to a planet of those monsters, and he gave his life defending them. Something like that, I forget.

I was thrown by the working laser weapon, the size of a child’s water pistol. Um, yeah. But otherwise, a very fun episode.

I hated it, too. I don’t mind gimmick episodes–last week’s sci-fi fandom show was great–but this one just fell flat. Esposito and the Captain were way too over-the-top. Ugh.

I adore this show. That said, the last episode was hands down the worst episode yet. Cheesy and clunky.

I did giggle at Castle’s “fade to black … Queue music” bit. He even hummed the theme music. That bit was the only amusing part of the episode.

Ponyboy!!!

I was waiting for Fonzi’s leather jacket to come out.

Horrid, horrid waste of electrons.

So it wasn’t just me then. I was watching this episode and thinking they had gone a gimmick too far.

The show needs to take a step back and have a couple of episodes that are just about them being detectives and solving a murder.

I did like the bit where boss lady chews Castle out for clowning around behind her “on camera”. Fillion likes to photo-bomb people in real life.

Castle doing the little da-da-daa-da-da-duh riff was funny too.

Other than that, it sucked fairly hard. The way the show is running, we should be in for a good episode next week though. crosses fingers for scantily clad Katic

Yup. I just finished watching the mockumentary episode. Well, I sort of finished. I wandered off to medicate my cats around 1/3 through and didn’t bother going back to where I started missing it. I don’t think I’ve ever lost interest in a Castle show before, and on the heels of the scifi episode which I absolutely loved.

I think it might have had some teeth if it really was documentary-style. But with the camera clearly knowing the path of the characters, being able to lead them from place to place, and with obvious three-camera scenes, come on.

I remember way back when ER did a live episode, it was fantastic, especially when Clooney gave the Cubs score in real time. Sooo Cooool. [/geek] This Castle episode could have been nearly as good if they did it in real-time one-take style, goofs and all, because that’s what a documentary would have been like.

No, I took the creavers as a definite Firefly reference:

Huh, I rather liked this last episode. I enjoyed how everyone treated the camera differently, even the ones that totally lost their shit.

I liked it well enough. It certainly wasn’t among the best “a camera crew intrudes upon the lives of our heroes” episodes that I’ve ever come across – the “X-Cops” episode of The X-Files comes to mind as one that did work very well – but it had its moments.

Finally got around to watching the last two. The documentary episode wasn’t that bad. I knew who the killer was from the opening scene, but other than that it was ok. This weeks episode, however, was a definite step down. Don’t even locked cell phones have the ability to call 9-1-1?

Nathan Fillion tweeted the other day:

@iMenchi:Watching Castle. most cell phones make an emergency call even while locked.” Pull not the thread, lest the sweater unravel.
