New Show on TBS -- "People Of Earth"

Hey, did anybody watch the new series “People of Earth” on Halloween night?
I thought it was pretty amusing, myself.

Watched the first episode.

Oh boy, another of those non-comedic comedies. E.g., Louie, Transparent, etc. It’s a fine line between being mildly bemused at times and wondering why am I wasting my time on this?

A few dashes of “Oh, that was nice.” here and there. Quite a bit of “Someone needs to fix this … now!”

Way too much of the deer stuff. Just way, way too much. The meetings of the “experiencers” could have been great. Instead they were quite chaotic. Much like improvised scenes. This need to be planned out better.

Tried to squeeze too much into the first episode.

I think the overall premise is promising. However it seems to be suffering from species-creep already.

Recorded both of the first two episodes. Just enough interest from the first that I’ll get around to watching the second, probably. But not any more than that.

I found myself thinking, “This would be great if only it were funny.”

That is not a good reaction to something that’s supposed to be funny.

I just discovered it yesterday, and I love it. If you don’t like Parks and Rec or Conan, you’re not going to like this, though.

It wasn’t as funny as I’d hope it would be, but I enjoyed it enough to keep watching. It’s different and I tend to like non-traditional comedies more than laugh-track, multi cam, live audience type shows.

That’s exactly how I felt about the series “Lady Dynamite”.

I liked it a lot!

I liked Lady Dynamite too.

Watched the 2nd episode.

Better than the first. Liked stuff such as the hotplate rant. The blonde group member seemed like she had interesting stuff going on in the first episode. Glad to see that carrying over. Oscar Nuñez does a great understated job here, as usual.

The real weak point of the show seems to be the aliens themselves. The show might be better off without them.:dubious:

I just binged all of the episodes so far. I really like it, a lot more than the promos (or this thread) made me expect. There is more going on with this show than you’d think. The characters all seem like shallow one-joke stereotypes at first, but they all develop into surprisingly sympathetic characters. I especially like how they develop the priest, Father Doug, and show a nuanced, multi-sided but sympathetic portrayal of faith. Even though I’m an atheist, I really appreciate seeing that kind of thing in fiction. This show treats the boundary between faith and skepticism as fertile ground for both comedy and drama, which is rare to see.

Plus, it has H. Jon Benjamin.

I’ve really enjoyed this. We haven’t watched the last few episodes yet, but I’m looking forward to them. Very flawed but sympathetic and well developed characters – even the aliens.

Just watched the season-ending double episode last night. Great stuff! Looking forward to more alien hijinks next year!

I’ve really warmed up to this. Looking forward to watching the last few episodes.

Sometimes, you can’t judge a TV show by its first episodes.

(OTOH, I’m giving up on Search Party after 3 episodes. Good Behavior is probably next on the kill list.)

I really wanted to like Search Party. I’ll probably finish it out, but I’ve seen about half of them and haven’t enjoyed it much. It’s kind of the opposite of People of Earth. It tries to make you think its going to be a deep and funny exploration of Millennial angst, and the search for meaning and purpose in life, and how people form bonds of friendship that are sometimes more and sometimes less than what we think they are. But it turns out to be a bunch of shallow, unsympathetic one-joke characters doing not-quite-funny comedy.

I binge watched it over the weekend. I was pleasantly surprised at how multi-layered it actually was. Each character had an eventual back story that explained their particular disorder. I especially liked the episode where Jonathan Walsh reveals why he’s such a douchebag to Ozzie Graham - to discourage him from investigating the aliens instead of killing him.

Without giving anything away, I recommend sticking with Search Party. I think the ending justifies it.

As for People of Earth, it was fun enough.

Good to know. Thanks.

Loved People of Earth. It wasn’t top tier programming, like Atlanta, but it was solidly goofy in that TBS way that I’ve grown quite fond of.

I decided to give Search Party a try, so set my DVR to tape the whole season when they marathon it on Monday.

Speaking of TBS series and marathons, TBS is marathoning all their shows starting Sunday night, back to back. (One series, then another, then another…) It goes on for several days, or maybe a week. Anyway, here are my thoughts:

People of Earth
Very Good. Looked forward to it each week.

Wrecked
Loved this. Found it laugh-out-loud funny. Imagine “Lost” but with the sensibility of Better Off Ted.

The Detour
Possibly my favorite of the TBS shows. Least common denominator humor, but delivered it so well I almost couldn’t stand it. Doesn’t hurt that I adore Natalie Zea.

Angie Tribeca
Despite loving Rashida Jones and being a fan of the Airplane movies, I just couldn’t get into it. After maybe 3 episodes I gave up. (That seemed like a fair shake.)

Search Party
Too many good reviews to pass up. I’m not really into the premise, but hey, it’s got Alia Shawkat, which is nice. (I’ve liked her work in more than just Arrested Development; loved her in Green Room, for example.)

Just finished this and it turns out it was awesome, both the plot and the characters.

On the one hand, it feels like it was written by, about, and for millenials. On the other hand, it feels like it was written by and for gen-Xers to point and laugh at the pathetic millenials. By the end, I couldn’t really decide which perspective was the intended one.

I’m late to the party in watching “People of Earth”, but my reaction so far is that it isn’t very funny. However, that isn’t a deal-breaker for me if the story and concept are interesting: for instance, I thought the shows “The Awesomes” and “SuperMansion” were pretty weak comedies, but pretty good superhero shows, so I enjoyed them.

I find “People of Earth” falls between two stools, though – I’d like it better if it were either more of a comedy or more of a thriller. As it is, I still find the concept kind of interesting and there are only 10 1/2-hour episodes per season so I’m still watching it.

(On a related note, I liked the comedy and story better in “Search Party”, although I’m not sure how a Season 2 would work.)
